In terms of power as a city I would say Singapore as they are an independent city state and are able to control their own destiny much more so then any other city, which is subject to a higher national authority. Washington DC while a lot of power is centered there the city government and the city itself holds almost no power as is the case with most cities. After all how many cities other then Singapore have their own armies.

In terms of prestige, finance, or the arts I think New York and London are dominant.

NYC, DC, London, Tokyo, and maybe Paris should all be in the running for various reasons.

For those talking about shanghai, when do you think it'll join the ranks of tip-top tier of cities?

Uh, Japans gdp is around 5 trillion. Tokyos gdp is not 5 trillion AT ALL. The last column has an M, meaning metropolitan area. Since Tokyo is so large the government seperated it into 12 wards. Actually there is no such thing as tokyo "city proper". The tokyo metropolitan area has the largest gdp in the world.

Quote:
Tokyo has the largest metropolitan economy in the world. According to a study conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers, the Tokyo urban area (35.2 million people) had a total GDP of US$1.479 trillion in 2008 (at purchasing power parity), ranking again as the largest urban agglomeration GDP in the world. As of 2008, 47 of the companies listed on the Global 500 are based in Tokyo, almost twice that of the second-placed city (Paris)

2. Paris, 25, 1,419,933
3. London, 22, 1,183,769
4. Beijing, 21, 943,768
5. NYC, 20, 1,166,469

Global 500 2008: Cities

It will take a long time for any chinese cities to surpass Tokyo as the financial capital in East Asia.

Shanghai doesnt even make the list, and Hong Kong is last on the list.

Today its New York and then London, when finance, culture, entertainment, fashion, education, innovation etc are added together.

By 2020, Shanghai will be top 3. By 2040-50, I dread to think the world as we know it will be topsy turvy.

What does the porn industry have to do with being a powerful city?

I have been to both too. This thread is not "what city people like more", but "Most powerful city in the world". LA is never ranked higher than NY for importance.

I disagree with your map. Many of the cities you highlight as alpha are mediocre and some actually impede development and are backward.
There are other maps that are totally different to your one
Yeah, London is really backwards. London is only ranked an alpha++ city by experts.

google , yahoo-LA is the most powerful Us city .

New york is ugly ugly man , and fashion capital what a joke , fashion capital is in Europe paris, milan, madrid, melbourne, and tokyo. you make me laugh what a ludicrous claim

The only claim New york has is its billionaires

There is no one powerful city in the world but a dozen of equal influence in some way
A city being influential and powerful is two completely different attributes.

Also, NYC was named the fashion capital of the world for 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Milan beat out NY in 2009, but NY still finished second. Nice try!

Cultural center of the universe? HA HA HA.
Can you explain a little more about "culture", please?

I can explain further.

New York City has tons of immigrants from all over the world..... India, Italy, Australia, China, Germany, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Germany, etc. Therefore, when immigrants come to NYC their culture is brought with them. This shows in the amount of quality of ethnic restaurants and the amount of languages spoken.

Care to explain why you think that?

And I bet you're from some small town in the south. I wouldn't be surprised.
