I imagine that the United States is among the best countries in the world in terms of variety and quantity of groceries. Besides the normal grocery chain stores, there are lots of ethnic grocery stores like various Latin American, East Asian, South Asian, Middle-Eastern, Caribbean, etc.

However, European countries are probably better in terms of the "pure" quality of the foods in their stores. I would describe European grocery foods as more perfect than American.

" among the best " is more accurate than the best.

You have to understand that a thread like this up ends Americans and their ideas they live in the greatest most exceptional blah blah. We have the food with the worst regulation, poor quality high prices. We have far worse internet and phone service than Western Europe. Western Europe will always outperform the US because they believe in govt and its regulations to protect consumers. Americans believe and have been propagandized to think unfettered Capitalism always leads to greatest outcomes. Why then do we have the most expensive internet, mobile phone, food, utility bills, etc etc. The country is not exceptional in any way at all.

Well, Americans actually spend less on food than any other country in terms of percentage of income.

What are they buying is the question? No doubt at all and no disputing that Europeans have lower prices and more choice for good organic foods compared to here. Americans buy a lot of junk food and cheap meats full of antibiotics, etc.

Why does "American isn't the best" have to devolve into "America is the worst"? Really, do we have the worst food and highest prices for everything, in the entire world? I wonder why it could possibly be that people from many countries still dream of moving to the US, if everyone knows it's better to be anywhere other than here.

I am talking about Western Europe, Australia and Canada and Japan. Why can't America strive to be better? Why must govt be hated so to the point that it doesn't serve our interests only corporate interests?

The corporations do not force anyone to buy junk.

There is tremendous variety in the US.

FYI, Western Europe does very badly in phone services and internet, Northern and Eastern Europe do way better, while WE clearly limps behind and tries to do catch up.

The statistic you are referring to, state that US Americans spend a lower percentage of their net income on groceries than any other country.

This statistic is very misleading, because:

1. Americans have to defray significant expenses out of their net income to cover costs (health care, child care, retirement or education) that are mostly covered by taxes in other developed countries. Adjust the net income of Americans by such expenses and you will see that the percentage that Americans spend on groceries will increase significantly.

2. The statistic is referring to spending on groceries, but not to spendings on food. Americans consume a significant higher percentage of their food away from home. Just 50% of the food bill is spend on food from grocery stores. This number is significant higher in Europe, around 70 - 80%. Europeans buy per capita distinctly more food at grocery stores than Americans.

3. It makes a big difference what kind of food people buy. Comparable cheeses for example are significantly cheaper in France than in the U.S. But the French pay most likely more per 1kg cheese than Americans because they buy more fancy or artisanal produced cheeses than Americans.
