Here in france, we are preparing for a fight with the SNCF, no need to say it doesnt help to be happy LOL
You French are so melodramatic, and always love to complain. As I've said before, probably one reason why Finland does so well on these rankings is that we have an endless optimism that things will get better in the future. But in France you say "no, things will be crap, just look at our president/senate/school lunches/traffic/whatever". We complain a lot too, so we have a lot of common ground there, but we try to make creative solutions out from it.
We are in the process of privatising our railways too, but I think we have the mentality that "if it goes wrong, let's fix it afterwards".

I'm optimistic, many indicators are turning green, if Macron survive his fight against Marxists Unions, then that will be a huge step forward. It would be a new page in the history of France. SNCF and France... It's a special story lol
It seems to me that there is strong correlation with low corruption and national happiness. The high tax high benefit equation only works when people see that most people and companies are paying their taxes. I know that in Italy everyone tries to avoid their tax obligations as they think the money just disappears.
Here we do not have the low corruption levels of Scandinavia and we also have the situation of having large numbers of immigrants from countries where corruption is epidemic. But what we do have are advanced data matching systems in the government and decent government benefits, albeit lower than Scandinavia's. So in order to get subsidies for child care benefits, to give an example, it is needed to have tax returns up to date and also immunistion registered. When we go to the doctor, generally benefits are paid automatically into our accounts. All this minimises but certainly does not eradicate corruption and attempts to keep a lid on tax avoidance. If people perceive the system is fair, people tend to be happier.

Now and then I play with thought that need to move and if seeking place for nice life at coming pension, then New Zeeland and Australia are top on my list.
Generally, I have no other reason to move from here than winters...So when spring and specially summer comes, my list goes empty and happy to live here.

Australia really has among the best of all worlds and it's why it is always ranked so high on these happiness rankings. How can you be miserable when you live in a functioning country with little corruption in a place like this?
