I think if you had said, San Francisco Metropolitan Area vs. Sydney Metropolitan Area, this would be quite an interesting contest. That said, while San Jose is better than it's reputation and pretty pleasant overall, these two as urban destinations go are in different stratospheres. San Jose is a nice day trip from San Francisco. Sydney is the destination in of itself. If we are talking about Sydney vs. San Francisco even, it is interesting comparison/rivalry. Both of those cities are probably Top 20 Global City/Region Destinations in terms of sheer diversity/quality of offerings, both naturally and in terms of built environment. But Urban San Jose vs. Urban Sydney is no contest.
That said, criteria, that I can compare:
1. Economy: San Jose's is more robust per capita, but I believe Sydney has a larger city GDP than SJ does. At metro level, SFBA, eclipses Sydney pretty easily I think.
2. Diversity: https://myaccount.news.com.au/sites/...1suffix=cta-an Sydney, but it gets a lot more interesting if comparing metros.
3. Weather: Both among world's best climates. I prefer SJ but I think a majority prefer Sydney. A win either way, though.
4. Transportation: Gotta go Sydney (city) here
5. Most Modern Airport: I think San Jose has a more modern looking building but I don't see that as much of a significant factor. Sydney has significantly more destinations which is more of a priority.
6. Downtown Core: Like I said, San Jose is TRULY underrated. But there is NO comparison here.
7. Education: Sydney, it has 2 universities ranked in QS Global Top 50 within the Sydney. Region? Close to possibly leaning SFBA, because Stanford.
8. Entertainment: Sydney over San Jose by a longshot, San Francisco Bay Area over Greater Sydney, close. But, with that said, nowhere in the Bay Area or for that matter outside of NYC or Mexico City has the cosmopolitan energy/vibrancy that Central Sydney does, in the Americas. I could see someone easily preferring Sydney here though SF has more and mixed entertainment, because Sydney's attractions are so compact.
9. Natural Scenery: City alone? Sydney. Blowout. Region? Too close to call.

Light rail in Sydney is a disaster. It's incomplete
Ok, it is the home of Silicon Valley so now I am oriented. But how can you compare Sydney, with more than 5 million people, with a small city of one million? You may as well compare San Jose with Sydney's north shore, or St George and Sutherland Shire.

5 million is the whole metro of Sydney. Sydney itself is 40,000. Yeah, I guess this country qualifies the whole metro as the single city. San Jose metro is 7 million. 2 million in Santa Clara county alone.
