I have to admit though, a perk for me of NZ nature over that of BC, is no bears, and generally no predatory creatures. I know the odds of encountering or having problems is still slim, but with that said, it is nice to have that added peace of mind.

Good point. Bears, cougars and moose can be a concern when camping out in BC, even just a few K outside of Vancouver it's a concern.

I've yet to see a cougar, but bears and moose have given me pause.
