Where's Moskova (Moscow) on there?

Edit: Number 25? That cannot be right.

Ive always thought the higher the wage, more buying power etc the harder it is to afford anything there.

The problem is the criteria for this ranking. Actually Chicago and LA has got big economy but they are behind Paris and London.

The correct ranking about the richest area in the world are the following :

1 Tokyo
2 New York
3 Paris
4 London

It has to be said that as for London and Paris the data are very hard to find since these both very old city have for a long long time get out their territory.
Since Paris has got just two millions of people and London has got 7 millions of people they couldn't compete with city such LA, but the city's data are not important in themsleves the area is important. As for the Paris area we can find 11 millions of people and as for London about 9 millions (or almost).

The error this ranking is making is while they have taken the total area of LA and Chicago they didn't do it for Paris and London.

how is this accurate? the cities populations vary widely so obviously the gdp is going to be biggest in tokyo. it is like saying the US has a higher gdp than britain...of course it does it is 5 times the size.

It's because the ranking is based on GDP. So a city of 30 million poor people outranks a smaller city of wealthy people.

I like this list better, because a country's GDP indicates how evenly spread the wealth is across their population.

well, GDP per capita isn't much better either. It's like that old tale "If I eat 2 chickens and you eat none, we both will have eaten a chicken per capita"

That may be true, but GDP still implies different standard of living in countries with higher GDP vs countries with lower GDP. I bet the poverty condition of the poor people who live in Luxemburg are nowhere as inhuman as those in East Timor or Africa.
