Most Americans think that the United States is the greatest country in the world (probably by far). People who don't succeed here are generally considered to be those who make poor life decisions, get involved in crime or drug abuse, or are mentally ill and such things.

This kind of thinking has been deeply ingrained in American society for a long time and likely will not change in our lifetimes.

Yeah, the country sucks so bad I wanna retch.

That's why California is the fifth largest economy, surpassing the UK..
and why Canadians are buying homes in So FL SIGHT UNSEEN...
and why we set the culture standard for the world to follow, for good or ill..
and why we CAN'T SEEM TO KEEP THE FREAKING HORDES OF PEOPLE OUT!
..not to mention that women's and gay liberation failed miserably here...
....oh, wait.. never mind that last one.

I for one don't think this is a terrible country. Sure, there are some terrible cities, and some terrible people but I think that can be said for pretty much anywhere.

We have our issues, for sure. Healthcare, and poverty stricken inner cities seem to be our biggest ones. Even with those, I feel it is a great place. My wife and I both work, and are probably at the lower end of the middle class, neither of us are educated other than HS diplomas. We are both in careers we love, own a home, two new vehicles, some toys (ATV's and snowmobiles), and have a rural cottage on a lake (about 4 hrs away) with a pontoon boat. We take a couple of week long vacations a year, one out of the country the other we spend at the cottage. In between then, we try and visit the cabin for a long weekend every other week.
Sure, it takes some budgeting to afford the close to $700 a month Healthcare bill, and stockpiling money into our retirement accounts for the future. Over all life is great, and pretty much relaxing , looking forward to this evening. The wife and I will probably sit on the patio and enjoy a couple of cigars and some bourbon.

Do I get tired of turning on the local news and seeing one murder after another in the closest city to where we live, which is Detroit. Absolutely. Do I get tired of the political turmoil , yes indeed. All one has to do though is turn of the news and social media and go out and enjoy life. In my daily routine I see nothing in my interactions with people that suggest things are as bad as the news and social media claim.

And lastly , if this country was so bad. Why do we have so many people trying to come here, either illegally or legally ?

By all respects though, keep up the bashing posts, I do enjoy reading them.

Plenty of homeless drifters and low income people would move if another country if someplace else would take them and if they could as well adjust to a new climate (health is a huge factor). Fact is, just like Americans, no one wants to deal with single, low-skilled, functionally disabled, homeless, and low income Americans. Same goes for Canada, Australia, England, South America, Africa, China, Russia, and so on.

Why don't Americans "just end the US" and break up into smaller units? As if it's that simple? Are you aware the US fought a horribly bloody civil war to keep the country together? Are you aware that the 50 states are not an empire? Seriously OP, that was a weird comparison: the US to the British Empire.

Where are you from, anyway, Junior Member? Where do you live? You joined this forum just to ask this question?

According to statistics, violent crime has actually decreased over the last few decades.

If the US breaks down into smaller units, minority groups in some of those units would be at the mercy of the majority, and the problems would get worse, trust us. They already are worse in some of those areas, since 2016.

Your ideas remind me of what Gobarchev said to Reagan about what G. called "the Negro problem". He suggested Reagan corral all the Black people, and designate one state as their official territory, and have them live there. He didn't elaborate on how to do this exactly; via the army, and loading people into cattle cars, as Russia had done in the past? And how to keep them there: passbooks, like Russia still has? He didn't elaborate. But he thought it was a simple and obvious solution.

P.S. I'm not making that up.

I keep coming across the same complains that:
the US is corrupt,
run by oligarchs,
people are homeless and starving and the government doesn't care,
the government's focus is in another part of the world
the government waste too much money on wars
the government limits freedoms and puts Americans under surveillance.
the government doesn't care about the people
crime and other social problems are increasing and the government does nothing

And there a lot more and these problems have been stated even before Trump and these look like serious problems too.

If that's so, why don't Americans just end the United States and form different countries? From what I can understand, smaller nations are easier to govern.

Britain is a very good example of this. When the British Empire was still around, vast swaths of the empire were poor and under developed, sometimes including the homeland, not to mention British soldiers and sometimes citizens were killed by the locals. But when the British empire dismantled and all that was left was the homeland, it prospered and today is one of the richest countries in the world.

And I think Canada and Australia are doing fine because they have smaller populations despite their size.

So if the US breaks down into smaller nation states, each with small populations, maybe these problems can easily be addressed?
Oh boy. Here's where I'm going to get into a lot of trouble but oh well.

Americans may complain about a lot of things in the US are they are legitimate complaints. However, Americans are emotionally connected to the idea of the United States of America. They believe that the country is exceptional, permanent and will always be here. I think many Americans believe that the US is immune to the forces that gave birth to it.

I for one am all for forming smaller countries out of the US. Or at the very least, keeping the US as one country but granting more regional autonomy to certain states and groups of states that form a region. Our current situation isn't going to last and the longer we force it to stay afloat, the harder that fall is going to be.

America is a kind of weird juggernaut that just keeps rolling down a hill, and all the forest animals keep scampering out of the way. Until it runs smack into the feed store in downtown Pagosa Springs..

I think the US losing its superpower status would be a cause for a breakup. I don't think it would happen before that.

Having said that; many key US allies are beginning to move politically away from the US and even starting to make some economic moves away from us. I forget the details but something like Europe and China possibly considering an alternative to the dollar. Because there are possible Russians trolls reading this I won't say much more about this.

No country is perfect, but at least the US has the stated goal and some mechanism for trying to improve. It has not always worked out well, but disbanding and throwing up hands on the whole project is unlikely to make things more stable both within the US or the countries that the US has affected.
