What is the measure? NYC has the highest GDP among American cities.

I would say per capita income and per capita GDP as well as lifestyle of the average person are more important for how well people are living. Using that criteria, lots of cities in the USA have a higher standard of living than NYC including SF, Seattle, Boston, San Jose and many more.

If we use GDP per capita as the gauge for which city is richer, the largest cities of Germany, Italy and China are not the richest ones.

Depends how you measure it, in terms of mean and median income per capita and GDP per capita Canberra is by far the richest city in Australia.

Most of these countries are the largest in the world and the richest city is located far away from the largest.

Shanghai's GDP per capita is only 14th in mainland China. Even Beijing is higher (11th).

The highest in mainland China is Shenzhen. And don't forget Hong Kong belongs to China, so does Macau.
