Vietnam is also a very poor country and anything a Chinese person could see in Vietnam, they can also see in China. Southern China has the same landscapes as Vietnam (eg. Guilin).

China and India alone have over 40% of the world's population and both are right next to Thailand. You can literally go from overpopulated India to Thailand in a short time by plane.

Asia is an overpopulated polluted nightmare with countries that are remarkably small, except for China and India which are giant size wise but also overpopulated and polluted.

South America follows the pattern of north America, big countries with barely any population covering it all.

If you're in colombia, a country the size of 3 Thailands but half of the population, Brazil is several hours away by plane, Rio is 7 hour plane ride from Bogota. In south east Asia you fall asleep on the bus and endup in the country next door.

In South America like North ameroa, things are spread out by miles of nothing other than giant mountain ranges and gigantic rainforests the size of Europe.

Little population and very large countries around it = less tourism and less need to develop infrastructure.

Overpopulated (like Asia and Europe, plus tiny countries = tons of tourism, infrastructure and movement.

I am starting to notice you like to throw around a lot of adjectives about countries and nationalities and you think it's facts but most of the time you're just basing your opinions out of your internet travels.

Because I saw your comments about many countries like the Usa or Latin American ones and you seem pretty judgemental, but then I read your countries I've traveled to list and you have never even been to the Usa let's not even talk about south America.
First of all, you have no business calling me anything, Ms. Deluded (yes we all know who you are). You need therapy.

None of your rant has anything to do with tourism. The reality is Thailand is better situated to attract international tourists because economically-capable countries like Japan and China are nearby and they are far larger markets.

Finally, Latin America is a polluted mess as well. Cities like Mexico City and Santiago are just as polluted as Chinese cities, which is disgusting.

Thailand already had many tourists from developed countries before Chinese and Indian tourists increased due to the rise of both economies.

Bangkok has direct flights from cities in Europe and Australia is another reason.

Thailand is smart in their visa policy. Citizens of many countries get upto 30 day stay free without Visa. For countries like India, China - Thailand give their citizens Visa on Arrival and even that Fee has been waived off.

It’s safer and the flights are usually cheaper, believe it or not. Flights to Brazil are just way too expensive when comparing it to other places like Mexico, Colombia, and even Europe. There’s a lack of cultural sites that compare to the ones in Thailand. The visa policy was also a hindrance up until recently.

With that being said, Brazil is still high on my list of countries to visit.

Costa Rica in Central America is becoming a popular tourist destination.

Sadly parts of Central and South America are not seen as safe to visit due to drug gangs and related violence.

Thailand has done a magnificent job of moving their focus from enticing men to come to there to "party" and concentrated on appeasing the ladies. The shopping has always been magnificent but now there are boutique hotels, beautifully decorated restaurants, spas, coffee shops and modern malls. My wife often comments that years ago she didn't like Bangkok all that well but recently she really enjoys it and is sad when she leaves.

When we go visit Chiang Mai, it's not unusual to see groupings of a half dozen Japanese, Korean and Chinese ladies in their late teens and early 20s enjoying these amenities.

All of this seems to be paying off with higher number of tourists.

A lot of people go to Thailand and attend meditation retreats. That is another thing Thailand has going for it, people are really interested in it's culture and buddhist religion.
