I keep hearing Germany, Germany...but some close family friends have a son who has lived in Germany for many years, and when they finally went over to visit during Christmas they were disappointed. The lights and decorations weren't as festive as the ones in the US (they said), and the German holiday spirit wasn't all that, either. Maybe they were in the wrong town.

It's not like the US. It's like a GERMAN Christmas. Maybe they were in the wrong town, who knows. But they aren't as big into lights and decorations - it's more the ambiance and even...dare I say it...the quiet sacredness of the holiday.

My daughter lives in Germany in a small town in Baden Wurttenberg. She lives in a house built in the 1700s. The town puts up a huge Christmas tree right across from her house, on the town square, every year. There are parades throughout the year - but not like US parades, GERMAN parades. It's not the same as the US, but it's charming.

And all that Christmas markets in Germany and the Christmas tree at the Rockefeller Center have no biblical basis, so let's not kid ourselves that Christmas is purely a religious holiday. If you go to Tokyo or Singapore, both cities filled with non-Christians, there are pockets where you will find tons of Christmas lights during this time. You obviously wouldn't know this as you sound like the type of person who doesn't own a passport.

This year, I plan on staying in the DC area for Christmas.

The National Christmas tree at the White House is nice for visitors.

DC is nice at this time of year!

So is the Historic Triangle region of Virginia, not all that far away.
