So I've been thinking for a while about visiting mainly " low tourist density " off the beat places when and if I get around to bouncing the globe for a bit in the distant future ...
What I wonder about though is how much of a good idea it would be and I'd love to read the insights of people who have done similar things already ...
FWIW I'm also thinking about an amateur documentary regarding the people of such off the beat places while doing so and I'd be interested in opinions on that as well .
You won't be the first. It depends on what you want to do really. Off the beaten path for me for instance is terrible because I go insane in non city environments haha. However, my friends and I have done the mountains in Hakodate in a house, Numazu where seeing a tourist is like sighting a UFO, etc. It can be fun. Sometimes you don't even need to go far for it as my residential excursions in Tokyo have shown me.

No, it's not a good idea. Why travel thousands of miles around the world just to see something obscure? Go hit all the big attractions first. There's a reason why the most famous attractions are the most famous and most visited.
Now there ARE some crowded, overrated attractions. But there ARE NO uncrowded, underrated attractions.
Also, I went to Paris in August 2017. Even at Versailles, Eiffel Tower and the Louvre the lines and crowds weren't that bad. And Paris is supposedly as overcrowded with tourists as it gets for Europe!
