When it comes to breakfast foods across the globe, there are as many ways to enjoy the first meal of the day as there are to say "good morning."
From creamy cornbread cake in Brazil to savory Tunisian chickpea soup, from fluffy Ukrainian pancakes to sweet coconut jam toasts in Singapore, these 21 international specialties offer a breakfast option for every palate.
In my travels, I enjoyed having the traditional English breakfast in the UK (bacon, sausages, beans, eggs, black pudding, tomatoes & mushrooms with coffee) and the traditional breakfast in Hong Kong (macaroni with a fried egg and a slice of ham, toast, with milk tea or coffee).
I’ve never had a traditional Japanese breakfast though, I would usually order the Continental Breakfast when in Tokyo.
Of course, I always found the local McDonald’s and ate the Egg McMuffin when I wanted a taste of home!
I was in Dubai and Abu Dhabi a few weeks ago and had ful medames for breakfast on several occasions. It's sort of a fava bean, onion, olive oil and tomato (among other ingredients) stew served with pita bread. I learned that it is Egyptian in origin, but is a traditional breakfast throughout the Middle East. Here's a short video showing one recipe and how it is made.
I think the continental (European) breakfast is my least favourite of the lot. How can you get motivated to wake up in the morning to just have a croissant and coffee? The American one (pancakes) isn't very appealing either. Asian and especially Middle Eastern breakfasts are sooooo much better. British is kind of in the middle.
The Tunisian one looks really good.
In general,
protein breakfast > sugary breakfast
savoury > sweet
