In light of today’s takeover of the u.s. capitol, and the lack of justice thereof, are there still any countries with strict punishments? The last incident I’ve heard about was years ago where a kid was caned in Thailand for simple theft, or the woman that got justice in the islands. I’m pretty sure people in Russia are still kept in line, not sure if Germany is still that way...
I would have thought we are average strict here. No physical punishment, last execution was many years ago. But in Sydney fines are being handed out, $100, if people are not wearing masks where required, only brought in on Monday. Someone is in jail in Western Australia for breaking hotel quarantine. We have random breath testing for drivers, camera surveillance to catch people using their phones while driving, not wearing seat belts, camera surveillance to catch people speeding. DH was caught driving about five mph over the speed limit last week and the fine is $280. If you get more than a certain number of points your licence is suspended.

As much as I love Australia, I do find that it's a very strict country and not laid back at all despite the popular image of easy going Aussies.

I've heard Canada was doing something like that also.
Just one $100 fine, well publicised, will improve the behavior of more people than a thousand $10 fines. Whether you like it or not, sometimes it works to set an example.
That caning was in Singapore, a foreign (American) teenager who vandalized a car. Singapore strictness assures the citizens of their right to live safely in an orderly society. People are given freedom as a reward for good behavior.
Yes, the first time I ever visited Singapore in 1994, I was on a flight from Hong Kong. I was completing my entry card on the plane and noticed in bold letters: “If you are caught carrying illegal drugs into Singapore, you will be punished by the death penalty.”
I said to myself: this place is pretty serious about criminal activity.

I think theoretically, majority of countries are very strict in general. But like you said, they're rarely enforced. In the US state of Kansas, it's illegal for your tires to screech...
