How can a country be the 'capital' of the WORLD WIDE web!?? You can thank an Englishman for the computer you're using you can thank an Englishman for the world wide web you're using to spread your 'master race' theory, you can thank Britain for the modern world (the industrial revolution), you can thank an Englishman for the vaccines that keep you alive at 70! And you can thank Europe for your freedoms (Democracy from the Greek Demos - 'whole citizen' and kratos - 'power'.

And back to the topic - the world loves football, it is BY FAR the most popular sport on the planet - American football garners no interest outside of Texas! As its the fans choice you have to say that football is the worlds greatest sport.
The USA has dominated both the summer, and winter Olympics, for the last 100 years. No other country has as many medals as America. Also, many more important countries play baseball, hockey, and basketball, compared to boring cricket and rugby, which for the most part, are played in poor loser British commonwealth nations, with the exception of the greatest commonwealth nation Canada, where either sport is not very popular. The USA humiliated England in the 1950 soccer World Cup, so once again America has shown that it is capable of defeating someone at their own game, like in 1980, when America defeated the mighty USSR in Hockey, at legendary Lake Placid New York!

USA is 39th in the Olympic Medal per Capita ranking.
If you go by those numbers then countries like Norway, Sweden and Finland would have 10x more medals than the USA if they had the same population as the US.

Might be differing stats if you separate by Winter Olympics and Summer as differing sports involved. But let's keep the thread on why the USA/Canada is much much less valued by NOT among the true Futball ( soccer ) as main its sport Nations.

Yes on all things. All sports and throw it some crumbs for some tech things. Maybe throw in we really do not speak English too.

Per capita rankings for Olympics medals mean absolutely nothing. San Marino had the highest per capita rankings in the last Olympics, so I guess they "won" the last Olympics with their 3 medals? They are the greatest Olympic team? No America won the Olympics with the most gold, and overall medals. Also, a lot of great American athletics, that could make the team of several other countries, stay home, because there is only so much room on the American team. What you're saying about Norway, Sweden, and Finland is pure nonsense, because you would have to say San Marino would win the most medals, no other country per capita is even close, with 1 medal for every 11,310 citizens. None of those countries would win anymore medals with a bigger population.

Why don’t you go back to Philly to support your beloved Philadelphia somethings or better yet, to Toronto to be close to your invincible Maple Leaf Rags?
I see a glaring contradiction here: you shouldn’t be living in LA basking in the Californian sunshine while the teams you pledged allegiance to, call you in need from three thousands miles away!
Are loyalty and affiliation empty meaningless words in the USA?

Yet awesome televised games I watched. Lots of music and games made a profit and what venues built were kept. A games many College facilities used and other already there venues used.

The Winter Olympics in that same year. Was in the still then Socialist Nation of Yugoslavia 1984. A stellar Olympics I remember watching. Awesome Ice Skating year and competitions.

Not even a decade later, Sarajevo was ground zero in the war for Bosnian Independence. Sadly almost 20 years after the war ended, many of the Olympic venues have remained abandoned.

Sad civil war swept that Nation after so much promise in a successful Winter Olympics. Soon after the games ended, Yugoslavia was in self inflicted turmoil, with the country formally collapsing in 1992. Its Capital city the showplace of the Olympics in degrees of ruin.

Sarajevo was under siege for almost 4 years of that war as the longest siege of a capital city in modern history.

10 years after the games, "the main Olympic hotel was turned into a prison and place of execution for Bosnian Muslims -- all overseen by Serb Forces." Even the medal podium was turned into an execution site.

This war had 100,000 deaths. If he is bitter today in the USA or back home in Europe now? No use blaming this Nation for it or if not successful here. His home Nation damaged itself severely and is a warning for all Nations at risk of Political unraveling. A warning even for the USA and our Political divide today.

On that, I feel sorry for him and if moving to the USA. He did not feel a part of it and happy or successful here. He then should go home if he is bitter here and be happy there where Futball (Soccer) is King.

Still plenty came to the USA and made a life without resenting it.

Sports do not rule my life in the least and I judge no Country by Sports games they prefer.

We don’t need people living here that hate America. Yes, everyone is entitled to their sports preference, but this is about more than just sports. The generous USA took this ungrateful loser from Bosnia in 23 yrs ago, gave him a better life, and is all that he does is hate, lie, and trash on America. The real source of his hate, is that he has failed to assimilate himself into America, as millions of immigrants have done before him. Why does he continue to live here? He is also an ugly racist on top of it!

Agree with this post! He has been under 4 different user names on this thread. His contempt, and hate for all things American come through loud and clear. The same hateful things over and over again. It is not just his preference for sports, which we are all entitled to. America opened its generous arms for this war torn, sick, poor, tired, and unskilled Bosnian immigrant 23 years ago, and he has had a much better life, than had he stayed in Bosnia. He is blaming America for his failure to assimilate, as millions of immigrants did before him. At this point I would like to see him go back to Bosnia. America doesn’t need people like this.
