OP, I've been to Japan twice. I was lucky enough to stay with the families of friends and see the lives of normal Japanese, not just a tourist experience. I loved the people, the language, the food, the countryside, the history, and the cultural traditions.

I don't love big cities, so Tokyo was not my favorite place. I'm also not a fan of anime, manga, or anything overly cute, and I did find that an awful lot of modern Japanese society seemed to be addicted to cute.
