Def true for NYC but locals love it. Not so much the rest of the country but I think it has to do with the fact that they cant afford to live here & theyre jealous we can
Transplants (the cringey Ohio grad who moved to Manhattan) LOVE Nyc.
However, more often than not, people are meh with their nyc trips lately.
Stavanger, Norway. Thousands of foreign cruise tourists flood the streets during the summer months (at least pre-COVID). I am not sure why, as the city itself is not that special. Norwegians would rather visit Bergen or go abroad.
Stavanger is a nice, pretty, tidy, enjoyable town, but Bergen and environs are jaw-droppingly gorgeous.
As someone of São Paulo, it's already a commonplace for us to name the city as "Hell de Janeiro" (we love bashing Rio!), while they bash us too. But talking more seriously, I can notice that brazilians from other states in general don't like Rio because it often gets most of the attention in the international media, overshadowing many other safer and more beautiful brazilian cities, and sometimes bringing romantism to crime, poverty and slums, as if they had pride of all these problems instead of working to get them fixed. But there is a stronger reason: Rio has the headquarters of Globo, the most powerful and influent media corporation of Brazil, often accused of manipulation of the public opinion and effectively ruling the country.

I think it's pretty obvious that people go there for Preikestolen.
Anyway people all hate their capitals/largest cities but tourists usually only go there. It's totally normal.
What are some cities that are loved, adored, and highly visited by international visitors, but the domestic populations overall tends to prefer other cities?
In the US I get the sense of that with NYC. For international visitors, no doubt this is their number one city in the US to visit and also tends to be the favorite for many. Whole for most Americans, while many do like NYC, it tends not to be their favorite city in the US usually you see cities like Chicago, SF, Seattle, Boston as preferred cities by the domestic population.
I'll say Las Vegas, Nevada. Tons of tourists but, the locals seem like they hate the strip and all the traffic it brings.
I asked a guy in Portland "this is such a beautiful city...why do you let the methheads run around here?"
He replied...
"Because all you people from California took control and ****ed it up."
Another local I asked said a lot of the homeless got there because other cities, especially those in Texas, give their homeless one way tickets to Portland. Also if I were homeless Portland is where I would be weather wise.
I don't think Portland has that many international visitors so it is probably not the right answer.
