What about Vermont?
The von Trapps settled there after the war.

In the early 1940s, the von Trapp family toured the United States as the Trapp Family Singers before eventually settling in Stowe, Vermont on an enchanted farm with sweeping mountain vistas reminiscent of their beloved Austria. In the summer of 1950, they began welcoming guests to a rustic, 27-room family home/lodge.

Yea I’d definitely go with WA state or CO. WA Cascades more similar to alps though.

Nothing in the Appalachians reminds me of Austria from a topography and landscape perspective.

the North Cascades probably look more like the Austrian Alps than the Rockies in that they are more forested, but Colorado has a lot more mountain towns so there is that.

Washington feels kind of like Switzerland to me. Colorado is like Washington, but not quite as advanced in a socioeconomic sense (it has no answer to Bellevue). Likewise, Austria is a little less advanced than Switzerland.

So Austria looks the most like Washington, but it’s more similar to Colorado on a comparative socioeconomic basis.
