In Boston, I grew up hearing that socks-in-sandals was generally a no-go. Occasionally you might see a certain type of townie/jock trying to rock the look, but they’d generally be scoffed at.

I later heard that in Europe, socks-in-sandals seemed to be a big thing among Germans. Not sure if this was a dig against German fashion sense by other Europeans, but it was my first exposure to the ideas of a people owning the look.

I visited Japan last year, and remember socks-in-sandals being a traditional look when wearing older clothing or when walking around a house.

I recently found that Dominican people may also be claiming the look as a very typical look for casual Dominicans at home or running errands.

Anyone on this site have any further insights about where it’s common to see people wearing socks in sandals and be if not proud at least not ashamed about it?

What cultures around the world claim the socks-in-sandals aesthetic?

Perhaps Boston is simply odder than most about outward appearances?

I suspect maybe it happens more in some cultures where it gets really hot and UV exposure is very high. Then practical people don't care about fashion styles or aesthetics as long as their feet can "breathe" and there's less risk of fungal infections but the feet are protected from UV and heat exposure.

Any time I've worn socks with sandals or flip flops (a.k.a. thongs) that's been exactly the reason for it. I've never been either ashamed or proud of it, it would be irrelevant since I'm mainly concerned more about my comfort and safety and have never cared about what other people think of any of my different kinds of footwear.

I can think of a few practical reasons for why some people would wear socks with their sandals to maximize their foot comfort and improve safety.

I can't imagine why other people would care about it.

I don't wear sandals, but I have some open toes shoes and mules.
I don't like to wear any shoes without socks - I have sensitive skin that gets inflamed easily with dust or sand.
For dress heels with a dress I wear pantyhose. For dress heels with pants - invisible socks or calf high very thin, nude socks.
With open toe and mules - socks that mach the shoe colors, so they aren't catching attention.
I despise flip-flops and don't wear them, ever.
But I saw people wearing socks and flip-flops. Mostly men.

I guess, people who wear socks might just have sensitive skin or don't like to see their feet dusty/dirty in the public. It happens easily when you walk a lot like they do in Europe.

When I lived in the Czech Republic, this was an extremely common topic because so many males do wear socks with sandals. I don't recall neighboring countries having as high a percentage of its citizens do the same.

I live in Seattle. A nice pair of Birks with colored socks is not out of ordinary. I’ve been guilty of doing the same. It looks fine. Better than running around wearing an ugly pair of New Balance sneakers IMHO.
