By bars and stripes I'm assuming you mean stars and bars? That would be the Confederate Battle Flag. The most well known (and abused) of the famous four. First Second and Third National being the other three. As to the U.S. or British flags and which one is more pleasing to the eye...hmm. thats a toughy. I would almost have to call it a draw. I like them both.

I think it would be strange to see the Union Flag without Irelands contribution to it.
A bit like seeing the US flag on the TV programme Jericho once a kind of government was set up. Really strange.

I like both the UK and US flags, They're both great designs in themselves.

However, I'm all for a new Australian flag! It's time to actually agree on a new design and stop some of the Sentimental feelings, About our current Flag. As despite the colonial history behind it, It no longer represents us well enough.

A New Flag for Australia?

However the Union Jack sounds a little more interesting hence most people refer to the flag with this name.

It is a favourite line of the pub know it all to say "actually its only the union jack when its flown from a ship" but for as long as its been called the union flag its also been called the union jack on land or sea and since the early 20th century its been perfectly fine to officially refer to it either as the union flag or the union jack (by act of Parliament no less).

Which is best? Both are iconic, though I like Japan's imperial naval flag more on pure aesthetics.
