If I had to live in ANY city for five years, I would go to Dr. Kavorkian and have him put me out of my misery. So I guess the one in the Maldives would be the best of a bad lot.
Location: Moved to town. Miss 'my' woods and critters.

I chose London. Didn't say that I had to stay in the city. Close to the European continent and I would visit quite often, Germany, Spain and many other countries from my London location!!!!
5 years is a long time. You'd need some serious career prospects to keep you busy for that long. I'd love to live in Paris for 6 months, but I don't think I could do it for 5 years. I live in New York now so I picked London.
I agree.
I did some New York and mostly Milan, did okay career-wise and even better culturally.
However, if I had to do it all over again with career as the main focus, then London, hands down.
If I had to do it all over again with culture as the main focus, in principle Istanbul, but I am concerned about the country's current bent in political ideology. So if I could go back in time 20 years, then yes, and even that would have been a big challenge, though probably worth it, but starting out today, probably not.
Milan over Rome for career, but Rome for culture. However, overall in Italy right now conditions are dismal; 25 years ago the outlook was actually bright, but they defecated on themselves.
Like London, New York is still booming for career, as it always has done.
Paris gives the impression of a nice balance between career and culture.
Los Angeles is on the list, but not San Francisco. For culture, career and urban environment, I'd pick San Francisco, though some may argue it is not a world city; for climate Los Angeles, career is probably good too, but not much of an urban environment.
Wow. This is an old thread, from pre-crisis times.
New York to live in, but post-2008 London does seem to be the place to get connected, pursue a lifestyle and succeed in career. It seems like that is where everything is happening right now.
