The 2019 Cricket and Rugby World Cups were fantastic to watch.

The annual six nations rugby has superb support, as does the Ashes cricket.

As for football (soccer), the English premier league is the most watched in the world.

Formula 1/Motor Sport, the Ryder Cup/Golf, Grand Slam Tennis receive a lot of support and are very popular.

Whilst annual events such as the boat race (rowing) and big (Horse) Racing meetings such as Epsom (Derby), Royal Ascot, Grand National at Aintree etc receive very good support in the UK.

Snooker and Darts are also popular in the UK, and major competitions are televised.

Cycling has also increased in popularity, although the French still have the most passion and supporters in relation to the Tour De France.

Athletics and Boxing are also universally popular.

Other countries play far more international sport than the US.

Americans seem oblivious to this fact.

As for the most popular sports in the world, they are;

1. Association Football (Soccer)
2. Cricket
3. Field Hockey
4. Tennis
5. Volleyball
6. Table Tennis
7. Basketball
8. Baseball
9. Rugby Union
10. Golf

Other countries outside of the US also have other sports and many play a lot of sport, and sport is very important to them.

The US is not as interested in international sport as many other western countries, and the US tends to be far more inward looking in this respect.

Thanks BNW I didn't name the sports you noted since they are rather oboviousin that they are played in the US except Cricket and Rugby are also played on a sub level at smaller clubs and collages.
Sports in the USA dont have to travel across six countries or 2000 miles to play a game such as basketball .we can stay in our own country to travel such a distance

America has by far the world's best sports culture with the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, and NCAA. No other country can match these sports leagues. America does have soccer with the MLS, but most Americans don't watch soccer on TV. We get the English Premier matches on TV, but the ratings are dismal.

I agree with this. Every country has their fanatics and specific sports they love. But the US volume and quality of pro sports is unmatched, and despite the pure volume, are very well supported.

I love being able to got to a baseball game then go next door to a hockey game or football game (depending on month) later on. And when it comes to MLB and NHL I can do it pretty much any day of the week during their season. Same with NBA for those that like it...

Sure these sports may not be as popular in other parts of the world, but that is irrelevant to the topic.

And the fans are just as fanatical as anywhere else in the world. Try tailgating at a Chiefs game or even a Sabres game in winter. These are great supporters who invest in their team as much if not more than any other nation. I love the US sporting culture! They even have the best stadium vendors in the world without doubt.

In all, no other country comes close.

Australia has always punched above its weight re sports participation and attendances. Prior to the 4 football codes becoming National, they were mostly state based, centered on the Capital cities. Australian Rules Football regularly pulled crowds in excess of 100,000 fans at finals matches in what was essentially a Melbourne suburban competition.
The Rugby codes were basically the same, with smaller crowds, although could pull huge TV ratings, especially for State of Origin matches.
Soccer was the poor relation to the other codes, being based along ethnic and European Nationalistic lines. The Code suffered for this, and post 1974 ( the Socceroos first World Cup appearance ), soccer became far more mainstream in the Aussie sporting psyche, and the game itself is a true national competition played at a high level of competance with Australian rep teams doing well against the heavyweights of Europe and South America.
So in the modern era ( tv, live streaming etc ) the Aussie sports fan, once parochial re their 'code. will now turn out in huge numbers to watch sports codes they might otherwise be unfamiliar with.
The MCG ( Melbourne Cricket Ground ) has hosted matches approaching 100,000 spectators in all 4 codes played in Australia.
Cricket matches also pull crowds of 90,000 at the MCG, in fact, would you believe, 86,174 spectators turned out to watch the final of the Women's World Cup Cricket Final in March 2020. Yes, you read that correctly....a women's sporting event !
And 53,000 spectators watched a Final of AFL Womens at the Adelaide Oval....and of the 4 football codes, there are about 600,000 registered female participants nationwide.
Nevermind the Grand Slam tennis held every year in Melbourne (Ash Barty the current World no 1 female player ), Basketball, ( men and women ) Netball, Hockey, the seemingly endless list of World Champion swimmers and athletes, The best Olympic games staged ( Sydney 2000 ), Yachting ( we still bask in the glorious victory of 1983 whe we took the Americas Cup from the Americans ).
Australians ( and our cross Tasman counterparts the Kiwis ) are fiercly competitive, and love to win, its a trait instilled in us as little kids ( well it used to be , not so much in the modern day. )
Our sporting heros are highly paid athletes nowadays and are venerated with almost Godlike status in the Aussie psyche and even couch potatoes who dont play sports are often avid and rabid spectators.
As a minor example, my smallish home town is hosting a NRL ( National Rugby League ) game this evening. The match is expected to draw 12,000 spectators and is a sell out ! ( 10% of the City population ! )

travel. see things. see the world. there is more than the big USA.

.. and in case you didnt notice, im assuming you dont much about Europe based on the distance comment.. Boston to San Francisco is almost 3000 miles. Going from Paris to Amsterdam to Brussels to London to Madrid to Rome to Zurich is less than that distance and we hit 7 countries ,and flew over 8.

European Sport Fans>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>American Sports Fans

Leagues though, USA has better organized/quantity of leagues.

The UK gave the world its most popular sports, that must count for something, also UK is the home of football, rugby, cricket, tennis, golf, Formula 1, hockey etc, in fact even horse racing in it's current form originated in the UK. It is of course also home to the worlds most popular and best attended sports league. Also I think that the way the football fans have basically destroyed the abomination that was the so called 'Super League' go's to show passion? For raw 'game day' passion I believe some of those South American game day fans are pretty 'white hot' along with parts of Eastern Europe.
