NYC is a better city, but Hong Kong definitely has the best skyline in the world.
There is nothing quite like waking up at 5am after an all day flight to Hong Kong, going down to the waterfront in Kowloon and looking at the skyline. It is truly one of the most wonderful sites in the world.
I haven't been to Hong Kong yet, but I think the Manhattan skyline has no rival. It is the best in the world and it will always be, no matter how many Hong Kongs and Abu Dhabis they build in the 21st century.
I want you to look at these two links, the first one showing pictures of the Midtown Manhattan skyline from New Jersey and the second one showing the Hong Kong skyline from the bay:
To me there's no question- Hong Kong looks impressive but weak, as if hastily put together to get the "wow" effect. It reminds me of Vancouver or Miami: lots of white glassy buildings that look fabulous and intriguing from the water but have nothing behind. A kind of "smoking and mirrors" effect. It lacks the grandeur of New York.
Not that the skyscrapers of Manhattan are great (they are not), but they are solid-looking, majestic and have "something". They also occupy blocks and blocks of Manhattan Island, whereas Hong Kong seems to have a good line of tall buildings by the water and not much passed that line.
To me the Hong Kong skyline looks more like Dubai and these Middle East places where huge, spectacular buildings are being built:
Tall, shiny and effective- but inane.

Reason: missing letter
This skyline argument was also on the "Other" topics site and I posted the following NYC skyline that also happens to be my current computer wallpaper. Say what you will, NYC has the most stunning skyline of all (and I live in Houston, TX).
NYC still IMO, has the best skyline in the world. And the funny thing is, the tallest buildings in the city, are all pre WW-II skyscrapers. Not the ultra-futuristic buildings that dominate HK. Take the Empire State Building. It was built back in 1930-31, yet many people around the world still consider it the greatest skyscraper in the world. Also, NYC isn't one skyline like Hong Kong. It is really three. Midtown, Downtown, and Downtown Brooklyn. If you factor NJ, Jersey City is up and coming. If you ever seen the NYC skyline from the Staten Island Ferry. Seeing Downtown, Midtown, and Downtown Brooklyn, AND Jersey City, is wonderful. Yeah, NYC may not have that many 1,000 footers like Hong Kong. We only have two. But how many people know the names of the HK 1,000 footers? Everyone knows the Empire State, and Chrysler Building.
Silkcity, you gotta be kidding. Do you really count Downtown Brooklyn as having a skyline??
