How expensive is it to live in the Canary Islands?
Is it essentially 'the Hawaii of Europe'? I.E., high cost of living, low wages, and tourism being the main industry?
I was in Gran Canaria a few years ago, and I was shocked at how dirt cheap it was. I had a fantastic holiday on roughly 30 euros a day and the beaches, the water and the general scenery were gorgeous. It is tax free, I believe.
I have just come back from Mallorca and it was a nightmare. I was struggling on 100 euros a day. I visited a lot of attractions and partook in water sports as I did in Gran Canaria but I didn't find it half as nice as Gran Canaria. There were too many familiar types around (chavvy families, 18-21 year olds on a week long drinking binge) plus the weather was unbearably humid. The beaches were filthy and overcrowded unlike Gran Canaria.
Also it has low crime, beautiful diverse places, from the sierra nevada mountains, beaches, beautiful towns, its not dry like the Canaries. Theres also a lot of British, South Americans, Moroccans, Nigerians, Dutch, Germans and French living here.
I´m close to Málaga, Nerja and Marbella which is good and 2 hours from the snowboarding on the sierra nevada. What more could you want.

What would you recommend nearer or in the US per your quote below?
I was looking at sites regarding the Canary Islands as we have a friend from there in San Diego where I used to live & we have close family in France...Thank you...
Your quote below:
"I could think of far nicer places to visit, especially if you are travelling from the US!"
QUOTE=susan42;7535245]Don't really think you can call any part of Gran Canaria a city and there is always crime, especially where there are tourists and then local people who are relatively poor.
All of the Canary islands can get cold at night during the winter even if 70s during the day-they have desert scenery and climates.
I think what you mean is that the beaches allow topless sunbathing,as do most beaches in Europe.Certainly nude bathing is not allowed everywhere.
I could think of far nicer places to visit, especially if you are travelling from the US!

Now I know why our friend is in San Diego.. Thanks for reply...
I have been there in January, then it was too cold for having a real beach vacation although travel agencies advertise it as a real summer destination. However, in other months it can be warmer there, January is the coldest month overall.
Unfortunately us Americans cannot go to Cuba. It is illegal and we will get fined and possible jail time.
From corporate dictatorship to communist dictatorship, both very free indeed. That's similar to the Soviet Union when people were imprisoned if they tried to go to other countries. Good thinking, USA.
I know, I know, Castro nationalized your casinos etc. You should have attacked Cuba past 1991 and give the casinos back to their owners, why didn't you. Built Guantanamo prison overthere instead. Prison, inside prison, inside prison, coming from a corporate prison.
You're from Northern Ireland and left Gran Canaria because it's "too cold"?
He's right, if you get +27C all the time with low humidity and a little of a breeze that actually feels cold or at least coolish. He probably expected +32C and up, which is normal to expect. I bet Morocco has got some.
