Atlanta's murder rate has dropped from 50 murders per 100,000 in 1995 to 14 murders per 100,000 in 2009. I don't know how many per 100,000 in 2010. I think Atlanta would be much safer.

You should have doubt about it because statistically it is not true. Rio is up there but Sao Paulo's murder rate has dropped so much that is is now one of the safer capitals of Brazil. The Unsung Story of So Paulos Murder Rate Drop - NAM

I think murder rates should not be the only criterion to determine how much violent a city is. In fact, I think murder rates are a somewhat irrelevant criterion, because it includes criminals killing other criminals for revenge, in late hours of the night.

I can't disagree with you. I still feel safer in Sao Paulo than in Rio but I know the overall crime statistics in Sao Paulo haven't dropped as much as the murder rate. For me though danger equals getting killed. That is the only thing I worry about.

I mentioned Maceio, Vitoria and Salvador for Brazil a page or two back, they're miles worse than Rio and Sao Paulo at the moment. I would've put Recife top 3 but it's murder rate dropped suddenly in 2009 and Salvador blew past it.

Murders in SP have undergone a huge decline and Rio's in the midst of one.

I bet almost all the murders are gang/drug related and the "regular" locals and tourist are not affected.
There is random crime in Colombia. Many innocent people have been murdered for their cell phones in Bogota lately - which by the way has a precipitously increasing murder rate from 1,300 in 2006 (a 20 year low) to 2,000 last year.

The 'tourist zone' is safe however and the city's still safer than it was in 1993.

Rio De Janeiro in Brazil is very dangerous.

So is the suburbs of Johannesburg in South Africa.
