Even Lisbon, a relatively small city in a not prosperous country, as built a metro - and it is terrific.

Not gonna happen. The auto companies own[ed] this country. What's good for the auto makers is good for America.

Public transit puts no $$$ into the pockets of auto executives. The auto makers have convinced Americans that they hate shared transit and must be able to go where they want any time of day or night they want, any way they want.

This same idea has been sold to the US government which subsidizes road and highway projects all over the country, ever greater and wider and faster freeways, to ever more far flung suburbs where developers have spent the last 50 years making a killing on the construction of endless subdivisions.

Real usable public transportation in this country is an unrealizable pipe dream. It's too late. The bill of goods has been sold.

Paris' subway has a great coverage indeed! But the nicest subways I've seen are those in Munich and Stockholm.

Moscow, Russia has the biggest bestest subway in the world, totally eclipsing anything the Parisians or New Yorkers or Londoners ever dreamed of X 10. Built largely by Stalin.

The Moscow Metro has more than 176 stations and carries approximately 10 million people per day. Currently, the price of a Metro ticket which will take you to any Metro station in Moscow....is the equivalent of.....60 cents.

The Moscow Metro works. Trains run in about every 30 seconds. The Metro is the backbone of Moscow. And from the Metro subway stations one may catch a local train to any place within hundreds of miles in any direction, or a distance train which may go to Finland or Khazakstan or Vladivostock, ten time zones away.

You want to talk about public transportation that works? Talk to the Russians.

Unhappily, I agree. But my own feeling is that a bill of goods is never sold unless it's bought. Responsibility for the situation doesn't just lie with some distant Them, it belongs with us as well.

As Pogo said many years ago, "We have met the enemy and he is us."

I'm not sure if that list is supposed to be a ranking, but I'm surprised that London is above Paris. The Paris metro is a good deal cheaper, has much more extensive coverage across the city, and doesn't seem to break down as much in my experience.

I think the London underground system is somewhat overrated. The coverage is excellent but most of the trains are small and got no air condition. Quite annoying during the summer months.

You should follow NYC´s example and build one of those in each U.S. City.

Each resident would save a bunch of money in transportation and we would also be able to socialize more with other residents. I thing that´s the most important part... to be able to meet random people everyday of your life and maybe by statistic meet special people (new friends etc). I think that mass transit systems are more "human".... here in the U.S. 99% of the people have to use a car to commute from A to B (sometimes it is preety boring, specially when you are stuck in traffic).

Plus many benefits: No pollution, super fast, cheap (40 Euros per month vs 500$/month car expenses:tolls+gas+car payments+insurance)

I love those art galleries that Euro metro stations have inside.

While maybe not the most visually stunning, the NYC subway has got to be the best.
