It's a great cheap vacation if you keep odd hours and don't gamble.

Abandon all hope, ye seekers of healthy food, once you cross the city line...0.99 cent steak and eggs...lavish buffets...free drinks (play the nickel slots, put the coins in slowly) etc.

Do not miss the Hoover Dam tour. It's a great way to get out of town without having to rent a car.

Nevada is a great freewheeling place. One can go into a casino and be treated with great courtesy despite being dressed like a hobo. They have learned from past experience that such people have been known to pull out a roll of 100's that would choke a horse.

What an unbelievable loser. What is this imbecile's fascination with trolling this forum? I'd truly like to know. I cannot comprehend how one gets their jollies off just trying to instigate arguments and annoy people. And to come back countless times in spurts to just do it again and again and continue making a fool of himself. What a pathetic, mind-numbingly boring life this sad individual must have. If he weren't so obnoxious I'd feel really bad for him. But he actually deserves this existence.

That pretty much describes how many parts of NYC I've been to were, which is why I say it was way over-hyped. My last visit I spent 2 nights in Flushing, 2 nights in UWS, and 2 nights in Clinton Hill, BK, and traveled all over the City. Pretty much everywhere was like that. A pizza joint or a corner store would be open 24 hours and that would be about it. I tried to get a bite to eat near Times Square right at midnight and this diner said they only served dessert after 12AM. I think Virginia Beach and most suburbs I've been to make it easier to find comparable amenities (over a larger area of course, but using a car in these places is easier too). I was really underwhelmed.

I think what NYC does have 24/7, however, is a pulse. And that pulse is what most other places are lacking late at night. More people are out and about later in NYC than in most places. I do personally find Vegas to outdo NYC in this regard though, but really just along the strip. NYC's pulse I have felt in both Manhattan and Brooklyn (Queens not so much - it felt pretty dead there after hours).

You can go to Wal Mart in Gainsville Florida to get anything too. I do think NYC is a 24 hour city but not as much as people play it out to be.

I think all the latins and latin tourist help too it is part of the culture to be up later.
I like this. This is true indeed.

I think if you look at it from a blue collar perspective you'll find that plenty of cities are going 24 hours a day with people working, eating and coming and going at all times of day. Factories are going, construction sites are busy, maintainence is being done, markets are being prepared, goods are being moved, buildings are being cleaned.....there's a world out there that many of the users of this board seem unaware of.

That's true in any location in the world, some services like transportation or hospitals, taxis operate on 24/7 basis. In New York however plenty of white collar / business people work late hours. It's a global city and sometimes you have to adapt to people working in other time zones...
Videoconferencing and email made it possible to work across the continents yet time zones are still in effect

Isn't this more a question of lifestyle then? The vast majority of New Yorkers don't operate on this 24/7 basis. It's also possible to live like this in SF, LA, Chicago, Miami and probably a few other cities depending on your neighborhood and how well you know your city. I work freelance with people from a lot of different places and our schedules are really erratic. However, I can't recall any cities aside from Hong Kong that have truly bustling areas (and I live in NYC--Bed-Stuy, Washington Heights, East Village, Williamsburg--all bustling parts of the city in one way or another) on your average weekday twilight. Added to that is the winter (save for the holidays) which does a pretty good job of slowing down the place.

It's often a bit misleading when I hear people talk about how busy NYC is at all hours.

Yea. agreed. NYC is NOT bustling at all times as some might have you believe... some people need to get reality checked. MOST regular new yorker's arent running around in times square and going to broadway shows every night
