I think Australia is only superficially similar to the US. It is in fact quite a different country.

I agree. Culturally, despite media influence, we're at the two opposite poles of the English speaking world.

Why is it no one has mentioned Ireland? If I were to place it on a list, it would be a strong second behind Canada.

Despite being a spanish speaking country Argentina is very similar to the U.S. Most people there are descended from immigrants, diversity in climate and terrain, etc. They used to be one of the richest countries in the world back in the 1940's and 50's until their economy started to tank.

They even got Wal-Mart and Home Depot down there.

and.....

--- They both NEVER had problems with the French!
What's relevant to me is that they both need heavy doses of alcohol (or drugs) to feel even remotely at ease in the presence of their fellow humans. Otherwise, both cultures boast a deep-seated misanthropic disorder which they have turned into a virtue over time.

To me that says way more than all historical technicalities put together. It's all about the brain.

Well, let's see.

1. Iran (absolute control of everything by fundamentalist religious zealots).
2. (tie) North Korea and Myanmar (since the Patriot Act).
4. Brunei (obscene displays of wealth by small number of disgustingly rich people.)
5. Saudi Arabia (based on similar number of executions)
