I have an older friend (41, former software entrepreneur) who I used to work with who recently retired and is looking to relocate soon. We were at a coffee shop the other day and he mentioned that he is thinking about South Florida / Lake Tahoe but now is considering other countries. He asked me if I had any recommendations, and I would not even know where to begin, so I come to you guys.......

Assuming you had a net worth between $2-5M and the most important things to you were weather, safety, be able to keep safe investments, good health care and maintaining a high standard of living..is there a country that would be best suited to that, maybe better than America?

Maybe Bahamas, Costa Rica?

He's extremely pissed off, to put it lightly, about Obama-care being passed and is talking about just leaving the country - and I think he was serious. I am not too familiar with the bill, so I really don't know how it would affect him. He's currently in good health but worries what will happen if he has a problem down the road.

If you were him, where would you go?

If I had a net worth of $2-5M I'd hire a relocation agency to research the details.

So your millionaire friend is looking to escape the "high" tax rates in the US so he can leach off of some other government as an immigrant so he can benefit from low cost health care provided by and to it's own citizens? Lol.

You friend doesn't really understand how the rest of the world works, does he?

Thanks for the input Bob, that would probably be best since it's a big decision and I know next to nothing on this subject.

Clongirl: He's an extremely smart guy and is not looking to do any of the things you mentioned. He just wants a comfortable life where his family and health will be taken care of. He is fine now, but had to wait a crowded emergency room for an organ surgery and would have died if he had to wait another couple of hours. Meanwhile, people were being seen ahead of him for stomach cramps, flu, runny noses and people with no insurance just looking to get basic care, holding up people with life-threatening emergencies. It was just disgraceful.

This is the same guy who hired me in when I was fresh out of college and had no connections in the business world. He believed in me and helped me get a job, which changed my life. That's why I feel that I owe it to him to at least try to help him out.

I think New Zealand is a good choice to take a break from the USA. For his age and wealth he should be able to easily secure a business/investment visa of some type(there are a number of them).

With that money you could easily afford to buy a decent house in a beautiful town like Wanaka and a beach house up on the North Island. New Zealand you have mountains and plenty of beach so it's a nice mix. There is plenty of opportunity for investment. Outside of a few suburbs in the big cities(Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch) it is relatively safe. The country is easy to get around and Australia is a few hour flight away.

Down side is they have a lot of socialism problems with welfare and health care. The public health system is 1940's, but private health care is available.

I have lived in over 90 countries over the past 40 years. Almost all have different variations, that relate to health care, foreigner benefits etc.

Many allow foreigners to buy in to their health care plan. Many others make you provide proof of health insurance before you can become a legal resident.

Answer, first do a lot of homework on several places you might like to live. Then go in depth on the particulars that relate to health care and other benefits.

I found some information on various health care systems worldwide that might help the OP...(for what it's worth)
