Icebox=refrigerator/freezer......sammich=sandwich......battry=battery. .....the dump=landfill......geewiz= (the PC JHC) LOL.....stool=toilet......busted=broken......pop= soda (ie Pepsi or Coke). Wow, I'll have to think of more. They have been gone for quite a few years.
This has been an interesting thread... and as another poster pointed out, many of the words/phrases put forward are still used in the UK, and in Australia. I go to the dump when I have rubbish; a can is a tin here; a fortnight is a very common term for two weeks, and it's not uncommon here to refer to a bar of soap as a cake of soap. Although the term isn't used much in Australia, many British people have a downstairs 'cloak-room' in their home - usually just a toilet and sink, for visiting guests to use.

This one has always confused me as a 'pocketbook' is neither a book, nor does it fit in one's pocket! Does anyone know how a handbag came to be called a pocketbook in the US?
"snow"........not the weather....but on the TV screen!
"hi-fi set" these were wooden cases/big piece of furniture that held the record player.....usually with a hinged top that kept slamming down .... even if you thought you had tightened the thumb screw....that supposedly held it up
"breeze-way" I dont know if houses still have those screened areas between the garage and the kitchen door
"rathskeller" a room in the basement often outfitted with a bar...perhaps a ping pong table or music .... used for informal entertaining, sort of a game room.
"pant stretchers" metal frames used to put a crease in wash pants.
"mangle".....or an "ironing machine"...... a sit down apparatus for steam ironing clothes.
