This thread is a continuation of I can't take it anymore. Part 2. The other thread simply grew too lengthy. It's still there for your viewing pleasure and this new thread is simply picking up where the other one left off.

This thread is for those who wish to vent about improper use of the English language. Please remember to be civil and stay on topic. Please refrain from making negative generalizations about any sector of the population.

If you quote a portion of a City-Data post, please do not identify the thread, nor the forum, from which it came. The intent of this thread is not to embarrass any of our members, but to simply vent in a lighthearted manner.

Default Coming soon to a device near you!

Hear!, hear! May our thread never be bare! (& judging by past contributions, it won't be long before we're inaugurating Part 4.) May our perspicacity never waver.

Heard on a television news show earlier today:

"The statute of limitations have probably passed."

This was a news reporter who said this, not someone being interviewed on the street.

In the Part 2 thread I posted about how I had been noticing this error frequently in the past few years. That is, giving the verb the same plural or singular form as the nearest noun in the sentence, even when the subject is another noun located elsewhere in the sentence.

In that post, I gave another example from the news. It was the local news in that case, a story about traffic backups at a spot where a bridge was being repaired. The reporter added that, "A plan for building new bridges are in the works."

Apparently even professional users of language are not immune.

From a local community forum:
Hay anyone needs a ride to the Air Port?

A hay ride can be very enjoyable in the autumn, but I fear that it wouldn't get me to the airport--or the Air Port--in time for my flight.

The word "else's" comes up as an error in spell-check when I believe it is perfectly OK. So, apparently, do others (link).
