Really struggling with this, and I figured writers would know. "School is closed until May 1." Are they going back to school on May 1 or is May 1 the last day that school is closed? So confused. Thanks.
As written, it means school is closed through April 30 and will open on May 1.

However, May 1 is a Friday. If they meant they'd be closed that day, they probably would have used Sunday's date, or possibly Monday's.
A third thought: it's probably mandated that they close through the end of April, so they would have posted the May 1 date no matter what day of the week it was.
Summary: they'll probably be open on Friday May 1 if the shutdown is not extended or shortened.
I agree with the above. The way to think about it, is that the shutdown extends through April 30. It restarts May 1. In reality, it might start the following Monday. Officials probably should have looked at the calendar before issuing their closure dates for schools. On the other hand, they could call in teachers and staff on May 1.
Who knows at this point? In my area schools are closed for the term. Schooling is not closed, but schools are.
