I've looked around online and have gathered some info on this, but I was just curious to hear from any indexers about how they like/hate their job, or if you have any tips in general. Thanks.
I am a Writer and at one of my former jobs the Writers were responsible for indexing their work. I actually liked it a lot. Indexing (meaning a "good" index) takes a lot of skill and one has to really be able to look at the topic from the reader's perspective. It actually made me a better Writer.

so you have to be hired by publisher to do that right
I agree I have read books and tried to use the index and found it worthless pretty much
same with some commercial/technical pamphlets or booklets that are supposed to give you what you need to know about a product--just aren't user friendly
Speaking of good and bad indexes, has anyone noticed that the yellow pages changes their indexing from one book to another, so as soon as you get used to looking it up one way it changes to another method? That drives me crazy! Sorry OP, now y'all get back on topic.
