If you were going to move to the Black Hills area, which side would you prefer to live in (SD or WY) and why?

Thanks so much for the feedback, it is very much appreciated.

I grew up 18 miles West of Rapid City. It was nice growing up but way to touristy and fast paced. Lots to do on the SD side, but it's not a bad drive from the Wyoming side.

Newcastle area, Sundance area are much better in my opinion. A lot quieter. Although from either one, major shopping would be in Rapid city or Gillette. But that would only have to be every couple of months or longer.

Definitely Wyoming. One major reason is the low tax rate here.

Thanks Ann, what tax(es) in particular are you referring to?

I believe she's talking about property tax. Wyoming has a very low property tax compared to the South Dakota side. I know that down where we lived it was almost $3,500 for 10 acres with a 2100 sq ft home on it. And that was back in 1990.

Yes, property taxes are much lower here. Also, my husband and I both work out of our home and there is no small business tax - very appealing to us!

Wyoming doesn't have a state income tax, either. Not sure about SD. Also, I don't know about pay for other jobs, but I am a teacher and make a whole lot more in Wyoming than I would in SD. Many young people from SD who graduate in education come to Wyoming to teach.

Thank you so much everyone for the feedback, I really appreciate it.

Does anyone have any recommendations as far as specific towns to look at? I am planning on renting something until I find property to purchase, so I'm praying that I can find a rental.

I would prefer an area that is a bit more on the wooded side vs. wide open spaces. Thoughts?

Thanks again!

Sundance, definitely.

We're only 1/2 an hour to Spearfish, 80 miles to Rapid City and there are a few jobs here if you look real hard. Most people here end up going to Gillette to work but the pay VS the drive turns a lot of people off.

What do you do for a living? or what are you looking for (in a job)?

Thanks! I work from home so I won't need to find a job wherever I land...
