The previous posts sum it up pretty well - energy, tourism, ranching/self employment & government. Many of our young people end up leaving the state, which is why the Hathaway Scholarship was instituted - to keep them here. That said, it's a family friendly place to live and I think most residents wouldn't trade it for anything. If you are looking for city amenities, you will be hard pressed to find them in any quantity. The 2 biggest cities are still only around 55,000. The climate can be pretty gnarly. I know you east coasters think you know hard winters, but...... Good luck on your search and pursuing your dream!

When you get to Casper, stop at a Starbucks. It's where the good guys (and girls) go.

Starbucks and Open Carry a great combination - Casper coffee | Examiner.com (http://www.examiner.com/coffee-in-casper/starbucks-and-open-carry-a-great-combination - broken link)

When the city council passed an ordnance against smoking, citizens petitioned for a referendum and threw it out. The majority of people in Casper don't smoke; but the majority do believe that it's for a business owner to decide.

You'll either feel like you're on another planet, or you'll know you've come home.
