I'm currently living in Eastern Colorado. My wife is in the running for a job in Casper so I'm doing some research on the area.

I enjoy gardening a great deal but I'm curious about the difficulties involved in gardening in the area. Is winter length and summer length pretty close to eastern colorado? Is the wind bad enough to make gardening hard?

I'm also curious how difficult it is to find a property to rent in Casper with an acre or so. Horse properties for rent would be ideal if I could find one but that's probably a different post.

Casper is at an altitude much higher than the Eastern Plains area of Colorado ...

So the winters are longer, the summers shorter, and with the strong gusty winds prevalent in the area for much of the year ...

Gardening is a much more difficult challenge.

I suggest that you use a tunnel structure greenhouse for your vegetable garden in the Casper area, which gives you a lot more control over soil and ambient temperatures, allows the use of cold frames for starting vegetables (and we use "wall o'waters, too for larger plants), and protection from the winds. Typical structures are sold through outfits like FarmTek, although we have found that we need to reniforce the end walls to meet the wind gusts of the area. Check them out on-line.

My understanding is that the rental market for a SFH property in Casper is rather tight these days. You'll need to contact a number of the local property management outfits there to find out their listings.

Mr Dove, Check out the master gardeners there in Casper.

Master Gardeners set annual training

It will be colder with a shorter season than Eastern CO. So just have to make the adjustments. Work on microclimates. Find a place with a good southern exposure and use greenhouses.
