Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could help me please? We are looking to relocate to Wyoming but know very little about where the best place is to move to. We have 2 children age 3 and 4 with another one on the way so family orientated is a must as is low crime if possible and good schools. Could anyone recommend where the best place to move to would be please?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have done a little research into the crime statistics but feel I am getting nowhere :-(

Thank you for your help in advance, :-)

The best place to move to for most people is one where they can make a living. What kind of jobs do you need if any?

There are lots of good, safe, family oriented communities.

If you click on the City-Data header at the top of these forum pages it will take you to web pages where you can look up the crime rates and detailed demographics of almost any city or town in the United States.

Wyoming's schools are all pretty evenly funded, so the main difference is in the size of the school, and that mostly affects high schools. The high schools in the larger towns/cities offer a little more choice of studies, but then many of the kids are left behind when it comes to varsity sports, etc., so it's probably a wash. The bigger schools are better for some students; the smaller ones are better for others.

No towns/cities in Wyoming have high crime rates. It depends more on what neighborhoods you move into than on what towns you move to. Any town of more than a thousand or two will have areas more likely to be trouble spots. Stay away from them and you'll be quite safe from crime, but nowhere is it totally safe.

As CptnRn says, for most people it depends on where they can find good paying jobs. Is that important to you? And if so, what kind(s) of job(s) are you wanting?

Also, some towns are on the prairies and some are near the mountains. Very few are "in" the mountains, as elevations much above 7000 feet are hardly habitable during the winters. None are very far from the mountains and none are far from the prairies.

Well, this is a relocation forum.

You think it is bad here, you should see how many of these kinds of questions we get in the Austin forum, one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S.

Nevertheless it is surprising how many people don't do much basic research before jumping in and asking questions.

That said, City-Data does not do a very good job of making its user aware of the City-Data demographics pages available here. //www.city-data.com/

it's not so much that it's a 'relocation' forum...it's just that thing$ are SO bad everywhere, and people have been just barely hanging on by a fingernail for SO long, that they're desperate to 'bolt' to just about ANYWHERE that's better than wherever they are; and if they've never taken a vacation in Wyoming (or anywhere very far from where they are, or outside of the 'usual' places they might generally choose to go, where everything is provided for them on a silver-platter at the mere push of a button) then they cannot possibly understand how 'self-sufficient' one needs to be, in order to call this area of the Rocky Mtns 'home'. I just gotta say, whenever the topics of discussion turn to how far one needs to drive "just to get to the nearest 'decent' restaurant, Target, Mall or brand-name Clothier...it just makes me spew coffee laughing...

...Wyoming is NOT 'Metro-Suburbia'...it never was, it never will BE; there's just no NEED for the type of infrastructure which supports such a non-sustainable 'life-style' in this environment.

...and yet they keep POURING in...

Just a quick cursory-glance at the items for sale on 'Craigslist/Wyoming' links gives an easy indication of the sheer number them who are facing the sad truth that they can't make it here...

...all the back-yard 'team-roping/dressage' horse-prospects they can no longer afford to feed, along with all the 40+ footer team-roping horse-trailers with air-conditioned living-quarters, all the high-end sports-car 'racing-rims' and 20+ inch 4x4 Mud-bogger rims and tires (mostly from Laramie and Cheyenne of course) people even making a desperate attempt to sell properties and houses/mountain-cabins on Craigslist, just to avoid paying attorney's and realtor fees.

Yep...it's great out here...as long as you learn to live conservatively; otherwise it's just a big money-pit.

Demographics be-damned...it's all just numbers...one's and zero's...none of it actually translates to what is means to LIVE here. You either make it, or you don't. It's just that simple.

Of course you are right. Feel better now?

Maybe we should create a sticky thread... "Thinking of moving to Wyoming, this is what you need to know".
