Are four days a week the norm or is that something new they started this year due to economic reasons? I've heard that business's, schools, or other institutions are going with a 4 days a week now, to cut costs.

There aren't very many 4 day schools in Wyoming, but there are some. I think it's getting more popular and yes, it's for economic reasons (less bussing costs, less utilities, food for lunches, support staff, etc.). The district I was in in Laurel, MT considered it but it is a process that takes a few years to get through. A lot of planning has to take place. I think that the schools I know of in Wyoming do it because so many kids in the small schools play sports on Fridays so are out of school anyway. So that frees up Fridays for everyone to attend athletic events. One downside I've heard is that some parents have problems finding or paying for day care on that day that their kids would typically be in school.

I know that Wind River (very small school in Fremont County) does 4 day weeks because they lose so many students on Fridays to sports (travelling, etc) that it made more sense....

Why do the schools start so early? We never start in Minnesota until after labor day. We then go until the second week in June.

Generally it started later in the month, but this year it's really early. My guess is they get a bunch of days off for this and that (holidays) that they need to start earlier and stop later to make up for all the days off (state law requires so many days of instruction per year).....
