My wife and I (late 60’s) are trying to plan a trip to Jackson, Wy. in May or June 2014. The past couple of years we had planned for that trip but unfortunately things got in the way and we just couldn’t make the trip. We will be driving from Louisiana. We would be in Jackson 4 days and move on to Cody. Can someone recommend a hotel in Jackson, we are looking at The Ranch Inn and also a guide service for a day trip thru Yellowstone and the Tetons. Due to knee and feet problems my wife cannot hike any distance so we are limited to riding and short walks for sightseeing. We thought about sightseeing ourselves but a guide knows more where to go to see things and also the history.

We will travel interstate to Rock Springs but how are the roads from Rock Springs to Jackson? Is it a well traveled road ( I hate being the only one on the road where you meet a car every 20 minutes) and are there towns in between for pit stops, meals and fuel?

Any help, suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I know I will have other questions as time goes on.

I'm sorry I cannot help you with guide services but I can address your question about the road. The road from Rock Springs to Jackson is fine. There will definitely be traffic during May and June. You can stop in Pinedale for a pit stop.

I don't have any hotel recommendations, only because I always just stay at the Motel 6 (which has always been clean, comfortable, quiet, and far less expensive than other places). However, I can say that Jackson is my favorite city. I love the town square (that's what I call it, at least) and the scenery is hard to beat. I hope you have a fantastic time!

I traveled to to the Tetons and Yellowstone in mid-late May, the booths were completely unmanned (which meant $25 savings just driving through each park for us!) but like jody_wy said, not much in the way of services are available.

Yellowstone especially, in late May this year, there was still 2-5 and even 6 feet of snow (in some places) piled up along side the roads. Maybe 3 of 20 campsites were open, I'd suggest going a little later in June, even if it is busier, you'll find it easier to get around.

Plainswalker, are you or your wife 62 years young yet? If so, you can purchase a life-time entry pass to the National Parks, (and other places), for $10.00. I only had to show my drivers license when I purchased my pass last month. It will get you in to all of the national parks, national monuments, all BLM land, etc. All the passengers in a car are admitted if even one person shows their pass. It has to be one of the best bargains out there. Our little reward for surviving.

tramp? If you don't have this pass yet, you need to get one too. It is available as most park entrance kiosks and also most national forest offices. I'd bet there is a forest office in Jackson. If not there, then Grand Teton for sure. The national forest website has a page that shows locations of where you can purchase the pass.

For an extra ten dollars, you can also purchase the pass via snail mail. But why waste the extra ten bucks. There are forest offices all over the place.

Thanks, I do have this pass. I bought it a few years back on a trip to the Grand Canyon.

Still a spring chicken I'm afraid! Gotta work my way up to being eligible for discounts on the finer things in life!!! Even with my husband in the military, he's not on 'active duty for purposes other than training', or something to that effect... so he gets kind of screwed when it comes to military bonuses.
