I am interested in finding more authors who write stories set in Wyoming, other then Westerns and historical novels. I enjoy a good Western or historical novel occasionally but not as a study diet. I'd prefer more contemporary themes.

A few that I have read and can recommend are:

Margarete Cole - I have read a lot of her work and enjoyed it, partially due to my having lived in Riverton and Lander and been around the reservation.

I have read E. Annie Prioulx and while I found her to be an excellent writer, however most of her stories were pretty depressing or dark.

I read a mystery novel a few years ago that was pretty good, involving mountain climbing around Laramie and in the Big Horns, but cannot remember the author's name.

I have read a few of the Gear novels but would prefer to find more contemporary offerings:

Quote:
Michael Gear and his wife Kathleen O'Neil Gear who live near Thermopolis are writers of prehistoric fiction. Michael wrote People of the Wolf (1990), People of the Fire (1991), People of the Earth (1992 ), and People of the River (1992). He and Kathleen coauthored People of the Sea (1993). Kathleen also wrote People of the Silence (1997) and People of the Masks (1998). Thin Moon and Cold Mist (1995) is a novel of fiction which takes place during the Civil War.
Sarah Andrews looks promising but as far as I can tell only two of her novels are set in Wyoming:
Tensleep (Em Hansen Series #1)
Only Flesh and Bones (Em Hansen Series #4)

Look here:

The Wyoming Authors Wiki / FrontPage

Go over to the right and click on one of the choices under "Browse the wiki".

Also, CJ Box comes to mind. I read one of his books about a Fish And Game Officer caught up in some kind of corruption involving endangered species. I didn't care for it, but my buddy did. He's got a whole series, so somebody must like them.

Ron Franscell, a Wyoming product and former editor of Gillette's News-Record, has authored a few, most based in Wyoming. Shhhhhhhh... I hate to admit this, but I haven't read any of them. They've received high praise.

I just finished reading his Walt Longmire, books 1-5 series thoroughly enjoyed them. I'm ordering the next two now.

The series about contemporary Wyoming sheriff Walt Longmire is excellent and a very enjoyable read.

I'm reading #1 right now. Loaned to me by one of the Wyoming members on CD that I've been fortunate enough to meet and do a little fishing with.

So far, I really like it. Also, he was at a book signing in Ranchester just last week.

A friend just sent me a copy of Saddles to Sushi, A wickedly funny redneck satire of today's Jackson Hole. Written by Jackson native, Mike Bressler, who's family settled in Jackson Hole many generations ago. Yes, there are still left a few real Wyomingites in JH.
