Just found this study a little while ago on line. Interesting on how Wyoming is always coming in the top 10 of these different studies, here it is:
1. North Dakota
2. South Dakota
3. Oklahoma
4. Washington, D.C.
5. Wyoming
6. Hawaii
7. Nebraska
8. Montana
9. Minnesota
10.Iowa

Here is the whole story.

Here's where the 99 percent are faring the best in the U.S. - Yahoo Finance

Interesting that Washington DC is on that list. The '99%' fare well there for entirely different reasons that the rest of the country.

Why I left Maine [which is similar to DC] - It is a great place to live if you are in the 1% because the ecology is so incredible, both on the coast and inland. Money is no object? Then enjoy paradise – especially if you can escape to the Mediterranean [or anywhere warm] for the winter.

And it is a great place to be in the +/- 47%, because it is a welfare and a sanctuary State. Average annual benefit for parasites and the deserving alike? Over $50k. Only parasites outnumber the deserving by 50:1.

But beware if you are a working stiff – you will be considered an evil necessity to the cradle-to-grave socialist State of Maine.

Washington DC has to be on the list.

Their entire economy relies on making the rest of the US mailing in all its money to them so they can redistribute it - for which they take a huge cut.

It's the perfect business. Can't imagine why they got mad when the Mafia did it...

Just imagine how bad it is in the other 40 states that AREN'T on this list then. MN is consistently in the top 10 lists as well, for everything from healthiest to most beautiful to lowest unemployment.

Perhaps the other 40 states should relocate themselves onto enormous fields of fossil fuels too.

I do not know where the article arrived at their conclusions but i can say they off by a lot. Here is a post i made on the Oahu forum last year about Honolulu the least affordable housing market in US: Now, let's look at some sample Honolulu household incomes...
The average of these household incomes is $80,166, but the median is $70,166.
Household 1 - $30,166
Household 2 - $70,166
Household 3 - $80,166
Household 4 - $100,166
Household 5 - $120,166

The average of these house prices is $625,800, but the median is $425,800.
Now, using the author's "back of the envelope" strategy of dividing housing price by income, one can come up with four different numbers to "show" how many years' income it will take to purchase a home. Using the numbers in the example above, one can do the following...
Average house price/average household income = $625,800/$80,166 = 7.81 years
Median house price/median household income = $425,800/$70,166 = 6.07 years
Median house price/average household income = $425,800/$80,166 = 5.31 years
Average house price/median household income = $625,800/$70,166 = 8.92 years

I fall into one of this category of a yearly income of $78,000 on one income. How do people overcome the difference? You don't take very many vacations to the Mainland USA, myself none. You don't go out to dinner/movie very often, maybe once a month, I go DVD at home for the movie. Maybe you get roommates, rent out one of your bedrooms. I Rent which is expensive, staring at $1500+ a month depending on # of bedrooms and where you live. Sometimes entire families live at home and all have jobs contributing to the payment of the loan. A lot of times you work two jobs, sometimes three jobs. It varies greatly but people get by and do it painfully sometimes. There is a large homeless population living here, due to those factors. This does not get into medical expenses, Utilities, food and Auto/Insurance expenses, but all adds up also. I also know i will not be able to retire here will move back to the Main Land maybe to Wyoming. Which i am planning now, for down the road.
Just my 2 cents.
Scott

remember we are at the top of the watershed of most river drainages in the Western US. One spot in western Wyoming depends on which side of the mountain I pee on and I can get 3 drainages......remember to always drink upstream of the herd
