I like the idea of the GoPro camera! It would be a "fun" gift for him. But if he needs the necessities I guess that would make more sense!

Or a valid US Passport if your son has one, will be another way also to get his Wyoming license . I used mine the last time i renewed my driver Licence here in Hawaii where i live now. I read on the Wyoming DMV they allow it also as another form of ID.
Safe travels for you son, on his journey to Wyoming.
Scott

Appreciate all the good wishes and ideas..Honestly I think I am pretending that he isn't about to move that far away...He will always be my little boy and I want him to follow his heart but it will be an adjustment for me ..

sunsprit..appreciate all the detailed info..very helpful

ps..something I do that my dad did for me is keep AAA for them ...even if the kids are passengers they can always get a tow, locked car keys & battery charges..I need to see if it is Plus.. I think it is..

a Leatherman, a 2-1/2” folding blade knife made from CPM S30V steel with belt case, a sharpening stone and a honing stone [they are not the same thing]

Tell him not to leave home without them, waterproof matches and a compass.

And make sure that he knows how to use the entire kit.

Since I was 6, I never left the house without a knife, the ability to make fire, and knowing how to get home.

Great suggestion from Wm Jas, however, I would go one step further with a GPS instead of a compass.

Wyoming has many miles of miles. It's not uncommon to travel 100+ miles between filling stations or help of any kind. Get caught in a snow storm and it's nice to have a GPS and be able to see exactly how far that next town is.

If he's in to hiking, or exploring in the mountains, the GPS would really come in handy for somebody that is not familiar with the area and be able to mark spots to come back later. Finding that fishing hole is outstanding. Finding it a second time is even better. Same with someplace to camp, being able to find that stream for some water, or getting back to your vehicle.

Good ideas...He gave me his Garmin GPS because he likes his IPhone Maps but I think it would be better to have the Garmin in his glove compartment as a backup..

ps. He is experienced with NC mountain outdoor hiking gear but Wyoming will be
new challenges..He loves kayaking ..

A packet of self addressed stamped envelopes and stationary or post card stamps.... so he can write to his ma

I was 23 when I made my first "adult" trip to Wyoming...and 28 when I moved out there. Gas can for the car... and a tool kit to keep in the car.. winter survival kit (matches, candles, goodies, etc. in a metal coffee can (if those still exist!)

Good luck to your son
