We will be driving through Wyoming on I-80 W during our drive to CA. We will be stopping in Rawlins for one night. Are there any interesting areas to make a detour in WY? What about places to eat? Don't want to go too far from I-80 due to time constraints, but would like to make some pit stops. Natural beauty is something that interests us, if that helps. Suggestions?

Most of the tourist attractions are well away from I-80 in the Yellowstone area or the Black Hills. In Rawlins you would visit the old state prison. I've heard the tours are interesting. Other than that, there is the Wild Horse Loop in Rock Springs that will take you to Green River, but that is a slow drive and during the winter the road isn't maintained and so is impassable. A good place to eat is Penny's Diner. There is one in Rawlins and one in Green River. Little America is a big truck stop in the middle of nowhere near Green River that I have also heard serves good food.

Ames monument is a quick stop off I-80 between Cheyenne and Laramie. The old Territorial Prison in Laramie can be a quick stop. Little America good pot roast , and real silver wear.

If your schedule allows the detour off I-80, I woudn't pass up the opportunity to venture South to Saratoga and a stop to the Hot Springs for a soak ... and it's also got a decent restaurant or two in town. As you'll not find much in the way of attractions in Rawlins or restaurants (Anong's is probably my fav in that town) ...

Otherwise, unless you have some specific interests ... such as the museums in Cheyenne, or some of the local scenery/rock formations in the Vedauwoo area between Cheyenne and Laramie ... it's pretty slim pickin's for touristy attractions close to the I-80 route.

Ghost adventrues did a story about the old Wyoming Territory Prison last year. It was kinda interesting watching the story, if your into that kind of thing. Suppose to be a Haunted location.
