A job opportunity has been presented to me in Gillette, WY. I was hoping some locals or people familiar with the area could give me some info. I have a young daughter who will be school aged soon. How are the public schools in Gillette? I was also wondering how well the rental market for apartments or houses that allow pets. I own a home in Alaska and would be renting in Gillette until I could sell my home. Any info would be great. Thanks.

I moved to Gillette from Anchorage (with a very brief interlude in Iowa) 43 years ago. In fact, had the Gillette of 1971 been anywhere near what it is today, there wouldn't have been any interlude in Iowa. I turned down the first offer to move to Gillette because it was depressing. Not so today, imo. It's a nice small city with excellent schools and quiet, pleasant neighborhoods. It really has a lot to offer. Coming from Anchorage (the one of 1970), I first started looking to Wyoming as I wanted something isolated near the mountains. Gillette sits on the plains, but I've come to like it because it gives me the choice of heading west or east on weekends, only an hour or slightly more to the high, jagged Bighorns to the west or to the older, lower Black Hills to the east. We usually let the weather decide for us. Hot weather means the taller and cooler Bighorns; cooler weather means the the Black Hills.

Pets are a major block to finding the best rentals. I'm a landlord myself, and I've always tried to find tenants without pets but have allowed them in a couple homes. It also depends on what kind of pets you have, of course. Right now there are a lot of rentals available, especially compared to a couple years ago. When my son got out of the Navy, the first thing he wanted was a dog. I told him to wait until he could buy a home, but he was sure he could find a rental with the dog. He couldn't. He finally bought his "dog house" -- a 1500 sq ft split level!

Here's a link to the Facebook Campbell County Home Rentals board. You'll have to request membership (free). It'll at least give you an idea of what's available and let you ask questions about any that interest you. https://www.facebook.com/groups/264291083638052/

Good luck!

We're new to Gillette. SO has been here a year and me since Oct 1st. We rented an apartment at South Fork when we first got here and I saw LOTS of big dogs. The apts were very nice/newish and rent wasn't bad, $799 for a 1 bedroom 1 bath. $90 for a garage, but there's a waiting list. We said we wouldn't move in without one so they just happened to have one come open.

We've since rented a 3bd 2bth house on 3 acres because I have horses, it's quite a bit more $1700. But it's nice and has a double garage and barn space for the animals. It's seems houses are quite a bit more than apartments here. We went thru Remax, they have a website with their listings. The contact lady's name is Carmel if you're interested.

We don't have kids so can't comment on the schools. Let me know if I can answer anything else.
