Okay, this is why we're moving to Casper. Moving from Nevada to Mass. then PA in 2001, we broke down in the first town in Wy (evanston) going east. Moving from PA to California in 2004, we broked down in the first town in Wy (pine bluffs) going west. We figure we are ment to be somewhere in wyoming and since we broke down on both sides of the state, we figured we belonged right in the middle. I love that story. And that's why we're moving to casper wyoming.

would love some feed back. we can't wait to get there.

Although you will hear some bad things about Casper from people in other parts of the state (I have a rancher friend in the Cody area and he swears Casper is just a step up from hell) I think it's a cool town. There are quite a few things to do, Casper Mountain and the Platte are right there, and there is a lot of available employment. I think it's all perspective.... when you live in Cody I think everything else looks a little shabby.

I'm not sure where Jessame10 is getting the housing info..... you will not have a problem finding housing there. Gillette is probably the worst place in the sate, and although rentals are scarce there is plenty of housing available for purchase right now. I know several people who live in Casper, and I've spent about a month out of the last few months down there.... While I'm not sure about apartments (haven't looked at them) there are plenty of houses for sale. You can pick up a nice place there for the mid $100's on up to as much as you want to spend. I think the median home price is around $175k, and there are places I've seen (Platte river frontage with good chunks of land) there for close to a couple million.... although unless you're a McMurry you're probably not buying one of those.

Default WY bound?

This is an interesting story .. hmmm not sure I would call it a reason to move to Casper though. I've spent a lot of time in the state and Casper would not be my first choice although there are not many to chose from. What kind of work do you do? Overall WY is a great place, my favorite is around Cody near Yellowstone and the Montana border is, the wind blows A LOT in Casper so be prepared for that.... good luck! Oh btw Jackson is also a great place!! If I were you I would definitely take a look around before making a choice..

Although Casper is not my first choice either it would be my first choice out of the economically robust areas. They have the mountain and the North Platte, and the city is large enough to fill most needs without driving far. There are a few thugs running around down there and the crime is worse than some of the other places in the state (still significantly lower than other areas in the US), but it's not bad at all. However, Wyoming is a shall-issue CCW state and open-carry is 100% legal, so unlike many developed areas personal self defense is your choice and not the government's.

As far as the wind goes.... the Cody area is one of the worst areas in the state for wind; Casper does have a hearty breeze most of the time, but it doesn't even compare to Cody for wind. I lived north of Cody for a while several years back, and the wind could get BAD. I have some friends about 30 miles north of Cody and they had 127 mph winds the week before Thanksgiving. Cody is beautiful and I would live there again in a hot second, but one does have to make a living. If you're around Cody and doing well you're either retired, own a tourist-dependent business or descendants of homestead ranchers. In Casper you can make a good living and still have some of the great things about Wyoming at hand.
