The federal government does not own the land. The American people do. The federal government just holds it in trust and manages it. That's why it's called the Bureau of Land Management. If Wyoming wanted the land it would need to compensate every U.S. citizen living outside of the state for taking their land.

The money would go to the people – it’s called the general fund.

It could be used to reduce the $17 trillion deficit or, as proposed by presidential candidate Harry Browne many years ago, fund annuities for those vested in the social security Ponzi scheme, saving us from the inevitable collapse.

Either way [or another way], it is the right thing to do.
