I meant to add, does anyone know of a climate that has cool summers and mild winters where the economy is doing well? Probably a contradiction in terms, but.....

msjenk, how about Portland, OR? Boise and Salt Lake City are doing well right now- especially SLC- but I doubt the summers are cool and winters are mild but lots to do in the outdoors of these two cities.

-Cheers.

Economy is well in many moderate climates, but I do not know of a moderate climate with $500/ month rents.

Portland, OR is 3x that rate, and good jobs are scarce. Some coastal towns that are economically depressed are below $1000 rents. But jobs are impossible to find and keep in those regions.

As a former cowboy all I can tell you is that the state has not used its coal to full advantage. While Peabody & Arch could have committed to coal gasification they wouldn't be filing for bankruptcy.

This is so stupid you would not believe it. I just returned from a trip to China last month. Highlight if the tour was a visit to the largest coal mine in the world and gasification plant. This company takes 3.5T of coal and converts it to 1T of diesel- that's 743 US gallons. The amazing part is they create 1000T of fuel everyday!

Wyoming coal and there's a lot of it can be converted to fuel. It's not easy but it pays for itself.

Shale oil is not finished yet the the Saudis rode it to the bottom. And that was to break us. Our fault for letting it happen. The good news is that we finally able to sell refined product for export and that will help a lot

Have you considered North Dakota? Montana? I wouldn't move to Wyoming without a job lined up already. I made that mistake in my 20's and only made it a year out there (for economic and health reasons, as it was in the 100's in the summer...dry heat but heat nonetheless).

Cool summers. Mild winters. Low cost-of-housing.

Pick two of the three.

(A vibrant economy and low cost-of-housing are usually mutually exclusive.)

Of the 50 states, 36 have not returned to the pre-07 employment levels. So recovery is merely an illusion.

In 36 States, Unemployment Rates Still Linger Above Prerecession Levels - Real Time Economics - WSJ

Only these states have recovered:

Arkansas
Kansas
Kentucky
Maine
Michigan
Minnesota
Nebraska
New Hampshire
North Dakota
Ohio
Vermont
Wisconsin

You will note that none of sunbelt or southeast has recovered

I wouldn't do Minnesota... the numbers are cooked and our state is so filled with liberal programs and taxes that are driving away business.

If you have proof that the report is "cooked" then you should provide references.
