Hello all,

Haven't seen a recent thread on this topic. I have been considering a possible transfer with my job to Riverton, WY. The research I have done thus far leads me to believe that I would love the area. I love the outdoors, wide open spaces, the spirit of the West, and don't mind the cold or lack of big city amenities. However, I have read that there is an ongoing court case about whether or not Riverton is on the Wind River Indian Reservation. I am looking to buy a couple of acres near Riverton if I transfer there, but not sure if I am ready to move onto a reservation to be honest. Can any locals chime in on this? What do you think the outcome of the court case will be?

There have been Multiple court cases over the past 80~100 years, none of them have decided in favor of the town being on reservation lands. It's not something I would worry about, but I say that from the perspective of being a Lander native and were I to move back to the area, I would live in Lander (even with a job in Riverton, it's an easy commute and my mom drove to the college from Lander for 18 years before taking over a "distance education" title that allowed her to work from home).

If you're worried, then think about Lander as it has Never been involved in that legal nonsense. There are 3 things that you give up, having the Walmart/K-mart in the same town (this might be seen as a positive though...), the main college campus and the airport. Oh, and you make a 30 minute commute... what kind of commute are you driving right now? The roads are in great condition for all but a few days of the year, often times the City streets are a disaster but the highways are perfectly clear. My wife commuted with a 4" ground clearance Jetta, though we did need to put some winter rated tires on to deal with the 1% days when things were their worst.

On the other hand, I worked with someone who had farm land smack dab in the middle of the Res. Apparently all Indian records were lost to fire in the late 1800's, some land was chopped up and parceled out and he's living on the result. He'd been there for more than 3 decades and said the only real issue were water rights, and those are a problem across the Entire Mountain West. The Natives stick to wreaking havoc on their own family and friends plus the unlucky few who get tangled in drunk driving accidents. Meaning it's really not That big of a worry for an outsider, especially if you're not growing crops/running livestock and need water for that.

Whatever you decide, best of luck. Moving away from Lander (the second time at least) was one of the poorer decisions my wife and I have made. Of course, that's only clear in hindsight.

Court rules Riverton not in reservation boundary - Northern Wyoming Daily News

Last month the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals decided Riverton is not part of the nearby reservation. Several articles about this ruling on the web.

A Riverton local explained to me recently that the latest attempt to have the town declared on the Res is because there is a desirable property in town that would make a convenient casino - already owned by one of the tribes and ready to go.

Like is written above, none of the historical court decisions places the town on the Res.

Regardless of whether it's on the reservation or not, I always thought Riverton seemed like a nice little town.

Riverton is a nice little town with it's own pro's and con's...but as far as whether or not it 'is' or 'is'nt' PART of the Wind River Rez...it might as well be, considering how close to Arapaho & Shoshone dwellings the town actually is.

Lander SEEMS 'nicer'...but lacks the convenience of the bigger, more popular department & grocery stores.

My only issues are with the DMV. One would think that in the yr 2017 they would have things just a LITTLE more 'stream-lined' and effecient, compared to 20 yrs ago...but sadly this is not always the case. So far, Cody DMV (and County Courthouse) ranks at the top of the list of 'best, most efficient service', as far as I'm concerned...with Gillette being the worst by far.

Really? Why? Off-topic, but since you mentioned it I'm wondering why.

I've lived in Gillette for 45 years and can't recall any problems with Gillette's DMV. Once there was a long waiting line (45-60 minutes?), but usually it's in and out in 10-15 minutes. I've been married to two out-of-staters, and both came back from the DMV the first time with big smiles. My late wife was from NJ and went there expecting an all-day visit. She was thrilled to get out in a few minutes, and came home talking about how friendly they were! My current wife moved here from Oregon. She too expected a long visit but was pleasantly surprised.

You're right...not sure where my brain was, have'nt had much sleep lately with the full moon and dirt-haulers/fracking-rigs & wallmart trucks running through town more and more with the nicer weather we've been having lately...

...in truth, the only experience I've had with Gillette DMV and courthouse was when I got my Kawasaki registered, titled & plated...and the wait in the hallway could'nt have been more than 30 minutes, now that I think about it...

...but the ladies who rotated between the Riverton & Lander DMV offices did cause me (and a guy I was working for at the time) quite the run-around.

Casper office was VERY quick & easy to deal with, when I last re-did my drivers lic.

Gas in Riverton is now $2.14 gallon (as of a few hrs ago) I'm sure Ethete is a few pennies cheaper...same as Casper...
