It was a huge recession for Gillette, but it finally seems to be coming back a bit. Demand for coal is on the upswing, and oil prices are up just enough to get some people back to work -- or working more normal hours. It's not back 100% and may never be, but it seems to be headed in the right direction.

Have noticed a steadily increasing-amount of heavy-equipment being hauled and fracking-crews blasting through & around this general overall region at 'Warp nine-point-nine', over the past few weeks...so something is definately afoot.

a pretty reliable indicator of the "health" of Wyoming's economy is the sales taxes collected, along with the taxes received from the extractive industries.

Both still down around the state, with hiring freezes still in effect at a number of gov't agencies at state and local levels.

there's more to "recovery" than the population numbers.

Extractive industry never produces an economy that is strong or sustainable in the long term. Just look at Appalachia for proof of that. Alaska which is heavily reliant on oil is also experiencing a crashing economy and its government is having major funding problems.

I agree artichomesteader. Here in WV, we have close to a $500 million budget shortfall predicted by June 30th 2018 because of lower coal severance taxes and that our elected "leaders" have never tried to diversify the economy.

how do the elected "leaders" do that???? every study done just put a pin in Cheyenne because they have an airport, 2 interstates and a rail road...Private industry needs to step with their own plan , and if it viable ask for tax breaks or loans. Government should not pick winner and losers....

Hopefully everyone's got the message and efforts to diversify the economy are being taken.
