One Dawg found the right combo for him, now.
Ok, one last time - My Aunt managed a ranch before the reservoir drowned the ranch. Several of my children were born in Wyo, Mont and Colo I lived and worked in the basin for 20+ yrs before giving up. I couldn't stand the incompetence and the religion.

Total taxes huh:

What would be in Wyo - my vehicle tax $400/yr; sales tax 4-5%; property tax for comparable is $1100; gasoline is $2.99/gal, diesel even higher and you're a producer state. No income tax - just like Fla - plenty of fees.

What I pay here in Ga - vehicle tax $20/yr; sales tax on new vehicle 6.5% - this wiped out the wheel tax - you pay it once; sales tax 7% - just like surrounding states; prop tax on log home on 40 acres is $899; income tax 6% - none on social security; $65,000 exemption on federal retirement pensions - which means I don't pay any income tax. Gasoline $2.50/gal and diesel $2.99 I live in the whitest county in the state - in fact all the counties along the TN-NC line are heavily white. I'm 50 miles from an interstate (just like Cody), even though US-76 and US-64 are at times driven like I-75

It is 20% cheaper to live here. My groceries are far less. Cody was the first place I encountered romaine lettuce for 99 cents/pound! Everyone sold it, in Mont and Colo per head.

Dr Smith was a fair to middling eye doctor and thankfully Dr Welch came along with new tech. He did my eyes in 2000 - the year we left. We were there for the booms and busts. One thing I can say is that Wyo is going nowhere = you're totally dependent on either oil, minerals or tourism. You have a negative growth going forward.

We are far more diversified. We raise peanuts, pecans, peaches and cotton, Also wine and tobacco. Year round tourism because of the excellent weather. Clear running streams in the north and polluted glyposate rivers in the south - the result of ag runoff. We have multiple military bases AND continuity of government. No place is perfect - it's just that we have finally found our's - 80 yrs afterwards.

GEORGIA!!!
The tax on the vehicle is 6.5% paid one time. That's instead of the normal 7% sales tax. The renewals are TWENTY BUCKS. That wiped out the ad valorem wheel tax which is regressive.

I paid those exhoribitant fees for 20+ years. Never again.

Good thing about Wyoming is there is no state income tax.
I don't know about the vehicle fees or registration in Wyoming.

I do know that the governor here raised our vehicle registration fees as well as increased the fuel tax.

So the best deal is $3.25 for 87 octane unleaded and $3.55 for super unleaded 91 octane fuel at Costco or Arco.
Sales tax here is 8.75% to 9.25% as it varies from county to county.
12.3% income tax here....

Montana has no sales tax

When I first relocated to Wyoming I always thought it would be nice to live somewhere like Cody or Sheridan. No state income tax and you could shop in Billings tax free. 'Twas never in the cards though. Now I have both taxes. But I am glad our gas isn't as high as yours nor is our sales tax. I've never heard of a tax over 8%. That's insane.

What made you go to North Dakota instead of not staying in Wyoming?

Kali used to attempt to collect state income taxes on people who left the state for NV, WY, AK - the non tax states.

Everyone makes an excuse to travel to Billings - either to shop or buy cheaper gas/diesel or go for medical care. MT still collects tax on Korean War debt thru their gas tax.

Montana might not have sales tax , but their property tax is a bit rough... one reason you don't see a lot of extra buildings on farms and ranches....

Losing my job mostly. But it was also not a good fit for me in general.

Actually not that bad. About $200 more than Wyo. They didn't smack us the first year on new vehicle plates either.

MT has permanent plates for vehicles at 11 years. Pay 3 yrs fees up front and never have to renew plates again for as long as you own the vehicle. Now if you sell a year later, you're out some $$, but if you keep vehicles forever it's a good deal.

OR has always been good on license plates. I think even now 30 bucks a year-something like that. Flat fee. ID same thing. Flat fee. 69.00 til 3 years, 57.00 til 6 years, then 45 from then on. Heavier pickups 72.00 flat. In WY, my 2008 truck has "bottomed out" at 210.00-will be that from now on (unless it goes up of course) 2014 truck didn't cost quite as much, will bottom out at 207.00 a year. The argument usually is, we don't have income tax, other taxes, etc. I don't buy it. I guess the idea is, if you want more than one vehicle, you can afford the license plates ya da ya da. I pay 1200 a yr.

WY system is flawed. Plate cost related to MSRP of vehicle when brand new. Purpose of plates/registration is to define the owner/responsible party for a vehicle. But has become another method of taxation. Does a 25 year old Ferrari F355 wear the road out more than a brand new Kia Sportage? No. But the plates will be ten times as much. Maybe the Ferrari is an extreme example. Lets say you are a BMW fan, and you find a 30 years old 733i with over 300k miles. Guess what, your license plates will be more than the brand new Kia Sportage because of what the Bimmer's MSRP was 30 years go. At this point, the BMW is worth maybe a couple thousand bucks, but your plates are gonna be more anyway.
