The only point in having primaries IS for parties to select their candidates; this used to be done outside of state election processes. Just because it has become a popular vote process does not mean that it should be wide open; that is just a political smokescreen to open up attempts at making mischief for the other party.

The statement that it should produce 'the 2 best candidates' is totally irrelevant to what the process is for, and is 100% disingenuous. If you want a wide open election, with a runoff of the 2 top vote-getting candidates, then you get rid of primaries altogether.

Party switching is hardly a new thing in states where one party has a dominant presence. Realistically, most democratic candidates don't stand a chance at the state and federal levels, making the republican primary where the true decisions lie. Our people deserve to have just as much a say in that process of who represents us. It's not like we're relying on other countries to spread misinformation and manipulate the electorate to our favor.
